The Correctional Officer Captain position is located at Holmes Correctional Institution. This internally promotional opportunity is for current FDC employees only and is subject to the State Personnel System E-Verify verification. Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age, Be a citizen of the United States, Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida, Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months, Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months, Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years. Specific Duties and Responsibilities This Correctional Officer Captain position is located at Holmes Correctional Institution. The incumbent in this position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code. The Officer assigned to this position has the responsibility of supervising Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to any security post on any of the established shifts. This position serves as the initial Commander during emergency situations and also plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift. Duties include but are not limited to the following: delegating post assignments, specific duty assignments, coordinating leave use and ensuring accurate completion of attendance and leave reports; working with lead officers to ensure proper security coverage; conducting periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and give additional duties or instructions; supervising searches for contraband and making daily inspections of buildings and grounds; inspecting physical plant for security concerns and to maintain proper sanitation standards; functioning as facility manager during non‑administrative hours; circulating throughout institution observing employees’ performance; conducting performance evaluations; scheduling and/or coordinating training programs for subordinates; conducting continuous training of subordinate staff in security procedures and performance; taking and recommending non‑appealable disciplinary action and recommending appealable disciplinary action to higher level management; supervising and coordinating body cavity searches as authorized by the Warden; authorizing non‑emergency applications of use of force; supervising inmates commensurate with the level of risk they present; managing inmate housing areas, enforcing rules and sanitation standards; transporting inmates using approved restraints and observing relevant laws, policies and procedures; conducting accurate head counts, maintaining custody and control over inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escorting inmates within the secured perimeter; inventorying personal property and issuing receipts; performing crisis intervention functions to include but not limited to subduing violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, or preventing escapes using approved deadly or non‑deadly force, restraints or other approved methods; maintaining facility security, including performing contraband searches of either male or female inmates and other persons (both clothed and unclothed); observing inmate behavior to identify inmates exhibiting mental or emotional disorders; providing emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents to include but not limited to CPR, first aid, apprehension of escaping or escaped inmates, implementation of evacuation procedures, security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation; conducting inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, building and outdoor areas; physically checking doors, windows, gates, barred sections, fences and other areas to ensure proper security; maintaining proper inventory records; issuing and receiving property and equipment; attending mandatory and other training; performing other related duties as required.
