Behavioral Health Technician / Mental Health Technician (Psych Tech) – Pediatric Psychiatric Unit

Behavioral Health Technician job in Bangor, Maine, supporting children and adolescents in an acute inpatient psychiatric setting. We are seeking a compassionate Mental Health Technician (MHT) or Psych Technician to help create a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment. Behavioral Health Job Details

• Location: Bangor, Maine
• Healthcare Setting: On-site, acute inpatient behavioral health unit serving pediatric and adolescent patients
• Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,120-$1,200
• Start Date: November 23, 2026
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Guaranteed Hours: 48 hours per week
• Shift Duration: 12-hour shifts
• Shift Options: 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m.
• Scheduling: Modified self-scheduling with every-other-weekend rotation
• Holiday Rotation: Holiday work is expected as scheduled
• Call Requirement: No on-call responsibility
• Orientation: The first week is dedicated to weekday orientation; regular shifts begin during the second week
• Patient Population: Children and adolescents ages 5-18, including voluntary and involuntary admissions
• Charting: Cerner and paper documentation
• Parking: Free on-site parking

Mental Health Technician Job Requirements

• At least 1 year of inpatient psychiatric, behavioral health, acute-care pediatric, or comparable clinical experience
• Experience working with pediatric or adolescent patients is strongly preferred
• Maine CNA license
• Mental Health Technician certification, Psychiatric Technician certification, or related behavioral health credentials
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• MOAB certification; on-site training is available
• Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate during behavioral escalations
• Strong communication skills, punctuality, flexibility, and a positive team-oriented attitude

Behavioral Health Technician Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care, support, and supervision for pediatric and adolescent behavioral health patients
• Assist patients with activities of daily living while promoting dignity, independence, and safety
• Use therapeutic communication, redirection, and behavioral health de-escalation techniques to support patients experiencing emotional or behavioral distress
• Complete safety rounds approximately every 7.5 minutes and maintain close observation as assigned
• Serve as a 1:1 sitter when indicated and communicate changes in patient behavior to the nursing team
• Participate in physical holds or other approved safety interventions using the least restrictive measure appropriate to the situation
• Obtain EKGs when needed and assist with other unit-based patient care activities within scope
• Support a structured therapeutic milieu for patients experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, trauma-related concerns, anger, or oppositional behaviors
• Collaborate with nurses, providers, therapists, and other members of the interdisciplinary psychiatric care team
• Maintain accurate documentation and follow unit safety, behavioral health, and patient observation procedures
• Float to an adult behavioral health unit if operational needs require
