Endoscopy Technician

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: United Digestives Endoscopy Technician is responsible for cleaning and maintaining all endoscopy equipment per manufacture guidelines. Contributes to the overall function of the center by assisting with instrument reprocessing, basic clinical tasks, housekeeping duties, clerical and front office tasks as assigned by management. Endoscopy Technician, under direct supervision, will assist with patient care as needed.REPORTS TO: Endoscopy ManagerRESPONSIBILITIES:Duties may include but are not limited to:Assists with the delivery of direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurseExplains procedures and expected sensations to patient and provides instructions to ensure patient cooperation and to minimize discomfort. Provides both emotional and physical support to patients during procedure.Sets up appropriate equipment for procedures and ensures necessary supplies are availableAssists physician with procedure as directedTakes and record vital signs.Places blood pressure cuff, sensor for pulse oximeter, ECG leads, nasal cannula, and grounding pad.Collects, prepares, and labels specimens accuratelyReports patient finding/observations to supervisor or RN responsible for the patient in a timely fashionCleans, maintains, and understands processes to handle expensive and fragile equipment according to manufacturers published guidelinesCleans and maintains an adequate supply in procedure rooms, utility rooms, pre-op, and recovery area, etc.Responsible for reporting broken equipment to supervisor or RN in charge, for sending out equipment for repair and maintaining an accurate count of endoscopes according to practice policyDemonstrates knowledge of and follows infection control procedures according to policy.Supports and upholds established policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental infection control, and codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.Makes post procedure telephone callsDocuments on all forms/systems as requiredAble to follow written and verbal direction involving policy and procedure pertinent to patient care.Assists with admission/discharge procedures as directedCross trains and provides back-up support for any area, including scope room, and front office area.Displays willingness to expand range of skills to include minor procedures and data entryCompletes all required trainings as directedPerforms any other duties and/or special tasks as assigned.REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or GED required; Certified Medical Assistant or the equivalent required, a minimum of 2 years of endoscopy experience may be considered in lieu of certification. Certified Flexible Endoscopy Reprocessor (CFER) preferred. Endoscopy Technician must be computer literate and able to operate various healthcare systems and multiple Microsoft Office applications.ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:Endoscopy Technician must have or be able to:A professional outgoing warm and helpful attitudeProvide a high level of customer service at all times.Communicate clearly with patients, clients, and coworkers through the telephone, email, and in-person.Plan, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks as delegated.Work under pressure; assess, respond to, and communicate issues in a timely manner.Maintain composure and set a professional example for coworkers.Be reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:Physical demands include full range of body motion including handling and lifting of patients, pushing , pulling, and reaching.Good visual acuity, accurate color vision.Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel sensation to discern temperature, texture, size, and shape. Ability to speak and hear.Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.Mental demands include the ability to handle several directives and set priorities.Patient care environment with potential exposure to blood and body fluids which may carry infections to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards.
