Position Summary In this role, you will help lead a team of fiber splicers and technicians. You will splice & test fiber optic cables in aerial, underground, and indoor physical field environments. The position requires attention to detail regarding setup of splice locations, termination points, splice quality, work environment safety, and general fiber optic construction. This will be a safety‑sensitive position on workdays, nights, weekends, and holidays. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Splicing on new construction and restoration projects for a variety of cable types (loose tube, ribbon, micro, OPGW, etc.). Occasionally active splicing in cables with both dark fiber and lit services. Conduct and validate testing of all network equipment to ensure adherence to all requirements and equipment manufacturer's specifications. Work with the Network Operations Center for final acceptance and testing of all newly installed equipment and rings, including provisioning validation, alarm monitoring to the NMS, and network switch protection. Operate fiber‑optic test equipment such as OTDR, OLTS, power meters, visual fault locator, and other related tools. Perform site surveys of remote locations to ensure quality installation of racks, fiber cable, etc., and report any defects to the fiber manager and/or OSP Field Engineers. Label and tag all equipment and cabling according to Network Engineering Diagrams. Perform advanced analysis and troubleshooting of problems or issues while assisting customers. Participate in an on‑call rotation schedule for nights and weekends. Perform other duties as required and assigned, including hardware and software updates and/or changes to remote site equipment as necessary. Complete and maintain hard‑copy and/or electronic records of work completed on various assignments, including splice diagrams, patch panels, and test results. Interface with customers and carriers in support of service delivery and assurance. Work independently for extended periods of time and respond to customer troubles on a 24‑hour basis. Collaborate closely with Inspectors, Engineering, and customers. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred. Valid driver’s license required. Five (5+) years of experience in splicing, testing, installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic networks and/or Outside Plant fiber, or a minimum of three (3) years of field experience. Prior work experience with base station equipment, NMS, equipment installation and maintenance, and experience in both the construction, installation and maintenance phases preferred. Prior use of Volt/Ohm meter, RF power meter, frequency sweep equipment, spectrum analyzer, fault locating equipment, and battery conductance meters preferred. Knowledge of Outside Plant Construction techniques (aerial & underground) preferred. Working knowledge of NESC, NEC, and OSHA standards preferred. Experience splicing ribbon and loose tube cables. Possession or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operation. Knowledge of fiber optics termination panels. Required to travel to customer and/or project sites over 90% of the time, often in exposure to heavy equipment and environmental conditions. Position requires on‑call rotation involvement. Must operate DOT‑registered vehicles and be in compliance with DOT regulations. Work Environment The work environment includes physical demands and exposures typical of heavy construction sites, roadside construction, and utility work. Employees may be required to work inside or outside, in all weather conditions including hot, cold, rain, snow, and at extreme heights. The job may involve use of ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks, and confined spaces such as splice trailers, manholes, utility tunnels, crawl spaces, or attics. Noise, dust, dirt, and grease exposures are common. Physical Requirements Must be physically fit to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb and kneel, and to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Requires sustained standing, walking, and the ability to perform tasks overhead or on ladders at heights up to and exceeding 30 feet. Must be able to work 8 hours a day, 40 hours per week, with overtime as required and flexible shift schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Must wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) at all times. Must maintain professional and courteous image in the presence of customers.
