Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT)

Introduction Exam Room Assistant assists veterinarians with patient care, monitors hospitalized pets, maintains inventory, prepares prescriptions, performs routine in‑house laboratory work, educates clients, and assists with surgical procedures at Family Pet Hospital/Tiny Town Animal Clinic. Operates under supervision of the Technician Team Leader and the practice manager. Primary Job Responsibilities Communicate with clients regarding the medical status of their pet, providing accurate information about fees, hospital policies, and procedures. Instruct clients on pre‑visit preparations, post‑discharge care, medication administration, etc. Educate clients about preventive medicine, vaccination requirements, and recommend laboratory procedures such as pre‑anesthetic profiles, geriatric screening, fecals, urinalysis, heartworm tests, FeLV testing. Provide handouts and educational materials. Demonstrate warmth, courtesy, and professionalism in all interactions with clients and patients. Restrain animals safely and compassionately during examinations and procedures, handling difficult or contentious animals. Follow established procedures to assist veterinarians with examinations and facilitate the flow of clients and patients through the outpatient clinic. Consult with veterinarians daily to plan activities and keep doctors informed of potential problems. Review medical records to determine required tests or procedures. Greet clients and escort them and their pets into exam rooms, placing the patient on the exam table and preparing for the doctor. Obtain basic information (weight, temperature, etc.) and gather reason for visit, symptoms, and necessary procedures, using pre‑exam checklists and educational pieces. Collect laboratory samples or coordinate lab work performed by another team member while the patient remains in the exam room. Anticipate and prepare medications or vaccines needed. Notify the veterinarian when patients are ready and provide necessary information such as nature of visit and preventive procedures due. Assist the veterinarian in the exam room by restraining the animal, preparing forms, and providing instruments. Remain until excused. Ensure all procedures are documented for billing; verify vaccinations, procedures, and notes are recorded. Escort the client and patient to the front desk and hand over the medical record and visit form for receipting. Prepare specimens for outside laboratories and obtain results by phone or fax. Monitor and order laboratory supplies as needed. Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following safety procedures. Perform routine suture removals, nail trims, weight checks, and apply bandages and splints under veterinarian direction. Give injections (intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous) as directed. Promote the practice’s products, programs and services using passive marketing and suggest appropriate products to clients. Accurately dispense prescription medications, prepare labels, package medications, and record them in the patient’s record with correct charges. Follow DEA and OSHA guidelines, document controlled drug logs, handle hazardous materials, and follow safety guidelines for radiographs, controlled drugs, and animal handling. Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment and lab areas, restock supplies, assist other team members, and maintain all medical equipment. Demonstrate initiative and teamwork, assisting team members when needed. Organize work area, exercise time management, prioritize tasks, and handle multiple tasks calmly. Work well with all team members, supporting the hospital, doctors, and practice philosophy. Perform other duties as assigned. Controls Over Work The practitioners provide assignments, indicating tasks, limitations, quality, quantity, deadlines, and priorities. They provide additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments. The Exam Room Assistant uses initiative in routine tasks but refers deviations, problems, or unfamiliar situations to the practitioner. Practices ensure finished work is accurate and compliant. Administrative supervision may be provided by the Technician Team Leader. Skills and Knowledge Knowledge of procedures for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, ordering supplies, and requesting laboratory tests. Knowledge of proper animal restraint methods. Ability to control or handle individual animal temperament. Knowledge of veterinary instruments, materials, storage, sterilization, and instrument use in the full variety of treatments. Knowledge of client service principles, quality standards, and client satisfaction evaluation. Knowledge of English language structure, spelling, composition, and grammar. Ability to work independently and accept direction; understand oral and written instructions. Physical Effort Frequently required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, and listen while often working in a bent position. Frequently use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel; reaching with hands and arms. Use strength or agility to capture and restrain stronger, more active animals. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally handle dogs weighing 150 pounds or more with assistance. Work Environment Exposure to hazards from aggressive patients, infected animals, controlled substances, unpleasant odors, noises, bites, scratches, and animal wastes.
