Mgr-Nursing Unit 2 East- Critical Care

The Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing all administrative, technical, and clinical functions within their unit on a 24/7 basis, ensuring seamless and effective care delivery. This leadership role focuses on enhancing patient and team satisfaction through strategic management, program development, and adherence to high standards of care. The Unit Manager designs and implements educational programs, establishes policies and goals, engages in proactive problem-solving, and provides comprehensive fiscal oversight. The patient population served within the unit varies based on its specialty and may include individuals with acute and chronic medical conditions, post-surgical recovery needs, and complex comorbidities requiring multidisciplinary care. Patients may range in age, acuity, and complexity, necessitating a patient-centered approach to ensure optimal outcomes and high-quality care tailored to their specific needs. This role requires a mature, adaptable leader capable of navigating the complexities of a rapidly evolving healthcare environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities Critical Care Unit, Central Monitoring, and Dialysis Fundamental Expectations for Success:

  • Perform work in a safe manner and follow all Reid safety requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delegates or oversees patient assignments based on care needs, considering patient acuity, age, cultural practices, emotional needs, physical or cognitive limitations, language barriers, and assessment complexity to ensure optimal care alignment.
  • Ensures patient care assignments align with patient acuity and staff competencies, guiding charge nurses in assignment decisions for effective care delivery.
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality and quantity of nursing care, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of nursing and hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Responds to clinical situations with prompt evaluation and support.
  • Identifies and communicates key factors impacting care quality, patient satisfaction, and organizational mission.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and communication within the team.
  • Develops and implements staff retention strategies to foster a stable workforce.
  • Manages the hiring process, selecting candidates committed to the organization's culture and service standards.
  • In partnership with the NERD Department, oversees orientation, ongoing education, and staff evaluations to support professional growth.
  • Cultivates a culture of accountability and personal responsibility, ensuring staff are held to high standards.
  • Regularly assesses staff competency, providing feedback and support for performance improvement.
  • Initiates corrective actions as necessary, including terminations when required.
  • Adapts work hours to meet the demands of the position.
  • Collaborates with the Director to determine staffing needs and create a staffing plan responsive to patient acuity and care hours.
  • Works with the Director to prepare the annual operating and capital budgets, maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Coordinates with other disciplines to meet discharge needs.
  • Leads departmental and hospital quality initiatives, analyzing data and using it to drive performance improvement across patient care, safety, and staff development.
  • Submits timely reports, projects, and appraisals to meet organizational deadlines.
  • Innovates by proposing, developing, and implementing new services and programs to advance patient care.
  • Participates in Nursing and Hospital Committees, contributing to the field's advancement.
  • Acts as a knowledgeable resource on the legal and ethical aspects of nursing.
  • Engages with and addresses Employee Opinion Survey feedback, sharing results and creating plans for improvement.
  • Supports Lean strategies to achieve strategic goals in day-to-day operations.
  • Cultivates a compassionate care environment, inspiring staff in patient care excellence.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient care quality and satisfaction, endorsing Relationship-Based Care (RBC) as a foundational model for patient-centered services.
  • Promotes teamwork as essential for enhancing patient care and satisfaction.
  • Ensures a well-informed patient and family experience.
  • Recognizes the importance of a positive patient experience and integrates patient and family feedback into service improvement efforts.
  • Embodies the organization's philosophy and mission.
  • Demonstrates adherence to Reid's Corporate Compliance Policy through knowledge and behavior.
  • Recognizes the value of community involvement and participates in volunteer opportunities that enhance the social, educational, spiritual, physical, and psychological well-being of the region.
  • Ensuring Employee Rounds and Performance Appraisals are completed on time.
  • Investigating and following up on MIDAS events within 7 days.
  • Participates in appropriate external professional nursing organizations and community activities.
  • Ensures compliance with DNV regulations.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Bachelor's degree required, with master's degree preferred.
  • Certification in appropriate field encouraged.
  • Demonstrated leadership and social emotional intelligence skills required.
  • 5 years nursing experience with two being in a charge nurse or supervisory role preferred.

Licensure and Certification:

  • Licensure in the State of Indiana as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • BLS.
  • ACLS.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of the nursing process and practice, with a strong emphasis on safety and infection control, staying current on trends and practical applications.
  • Ensures compliance with standards set by the Indiana State Department of Health, HFAP, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Exhibits advanced problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, making sound independent decisions as needed.
  • Maintains an understanding of healthcare delivery systems and the educational levels of healthcare providers within the team.
  • Demonstrates competence in nursing techniques and procedures across all age groups, from neonates to geriatric patients, depending on the area of practice.
  • Applies principles of personnel management effectively, including assigning, supervising, and evaluating staff.
  • Exhibits strong communication, budgeting, and leadership skills essential for effective management.
  • Ensures clear, consistent communication to maintain continuity of patient care and address issues promptly.
  • Employs logical and sound decision-making models to address and resolve problems effectively.
  • Knowledgeable in DNV regulations.

Position Specific Competencies:

  • Governed by essential functions. Work environment normal patient care environment which requires continuous concentration and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain patient care activities, fluctuations in patient acuity and staff availability.
