Production Mechanic
$25 - $28 per hourExpress Employment Professionals Defunct
Job Full Description SUMMARY
The Production Mechanic supports the safe, reliable operation of clients filling and packaging equipment for cosmetics, personal care, home care, and fragrance products. This hands-on floor role performs equipment setup, changeover, adjustment, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance. Prior hands-on experience with tube fillers/sealers and production labelers is required. The mechanic works closely with Production and Quality to reduce downtime while protecting safety, product quality, and GMP compliance. $25-$28 an hour, 1st shift and flexibility to work the 2nd shift and weekends as needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Set up and change over scheduled production equipment, including tube fillers/sealers, automatic and semi-automatic labelers, other fillers, cappers/torque equipment, conveyors, pumps, printers/coders, and other assigned line equipment.
• Adjust equipment during start-up and production to maintain consistent filling, capping, labeling, coding, and package presentation within approved requirements.
• Troubleshoot line downtime and recurring equipment issues; identify the likely cause, make safe repairs or adjustments, test the equipment, and escalate when specialized support is required.
• Perform mechanical repairs and replace common components such as pumps, belts, bearings, chains, guides, sensors, pneumatic parts, valves, fittings, and drive components within the mechanic's training and authorization.
• Complete preventive maintenance, inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and replacement of wear parts according to the established schedule.
• Maintain useful machine settings and changeover information so successful setups can be repeated and unnecessary trial-and-error is reduced.
• Partner with Production and Quality during start-up, troubleshooting, line restarts, and equipment changes; do not knowingly override an approved product or packaging requirement.
• Control tools, fasteners, lubricants, parts, debris, and maintenance materials to prevent contamination or mix-up, and leave the area clean before returning equipment to service.
• Document repairs, preventive maintenance, parts replaced, observations, and follow-up needs, and help maintain an organized supply of tools and critical spare parts.
• Follow lockout/tagout, machine guarding, PPE, electrical safety, chemical safety, and other site safety requirements; stop and escalate unsafe or quality-impacting equipment conditions. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
• Respond promptly to line issues and focus on durable fixes rather than repeated temporary adjustments.
• Complete assigned preventive maintenance on time and communicate blocked or recurring issues before they affect production.
• Return equipment to service only after guards are restored, tools and parts are accounted for, the area is clean, and required Production/Quality checks can be completed.
• Work with a sense of urgency while maintaining safe work practices, GMP discipline, clear documentation, and respectful communication.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum two years of hands-on manufacturing/packaging mechanic experience required, including setup, changeover, adjustment, troubleshooting, and maintenance of tube fillers/sealers and production labelers.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to use common hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, and troubleshooting equipment safely.
• Working knowledge of mechanical systems; experience with pneumatics, pumps, conveyors, fillers, cappers, labelers, sensors, and basic electrical controls is strongly preferred.
• Ability to read equipment manuals, diagrams, parts information, and work instructions, document work clearly, and prioritize multiple line needs during production downtime.
• GMP or regulated-manufacturing experience is preferred. English/Spanish communication skills are a plus.
PHYSICAL AND WORK REQUIREMENTS
• Regularly work on the production floor; stand or walk for extended periods; and bend, reach, kneel, crouch, or work around production equipment as needed for setup, inspection, and repair.
• Lift, carry, push, or position tools, parts, and equipment components weighing up to approximately 50 lb, with assistance or lifting equipment used when appropriate.
• Work around moving equipment, compressed air, production noise, fragrances, cleaning chemicals, and other materials typical of cosmetic and home-care manufacturing while using required PPE.
• Support production schedules that may occasionally require overtime, early/late shift coverage, or urgent response to equipment downtime.
DECISION AUTHORITY AND ESCALATION
The Production Mechanic is expected to stop equipment when continued operation could create an immediate safety risk, damage equipment, or create a potential product-quality issue. The mechanic must notify the appropriate Production/Operations leader and Quality when product may be affected. Equipment should not be restarted until it is safe to operate and any required quality checks or approvals are completed.
ROLE FLEXIBILITY AND ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Based on operational needs, the employee may be assigned other reasonable duties related to production equipment, maintenance, and facility support, including:
• Supporting production line setup, startup, shutdown, breakdown, and changeovers.
• Adjusting, troubleshooting, and repairing fillers, tube fillers/sealers, labelers, cappers, conveyors, pumps, and related equipment.
• Assisting with equipment disassembly and reassembly for cleaning and sanitation.
• Performing preventive maintenance, equipment inspections, lubrication, and minor repairs.
• Installing, relocating, or modifying production equipment, workstations, shelving, and guards.
• Staging and organizing tools, spare parts, equipment components, and maintenance supplies.
• Supporting equipment-related investigations, corrective actions, rework activities, and line recovery following downtime.
• Assisting outside technicians or vendors with equipment service and facility projects.
• Performing minor facility-support work involving doors, fixtures, work areas, utilities, or similar items within the employee's training and authorization.
• Training operators on safe equipment operation, setup, changeover, basic adjustments, and proper escalation of equipment issues.
The employee will not perform electrical, plumbing, welding, or other specialized work unless appropriately trained, qualified, and authorized. Van Nuys, CA
