Essential Functions:

The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2024-2025 academic year, we enrolled over 45,000 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 11% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% as Black/African American, 14% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 2% as multiracial. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of a curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Director of Student Success Programs, EOPS/CARE and NextUP at Fresno City College; counselor will cover a full range of EOPS counseling responsibilities including academic, career, transfer and personal counseling to a diverse student population. The successful candidate for the EOPS counselor position will be responsible for:

• Providing comprehensive counseling services, including personal, career and educational counseling to individuals and groups, and orientation and transfer counseling services;
• Assisting students in major selection, developing student education plans (SEPs), and facilitating career exploration and transfer program activities related to their educational goals and career pathways;
• Counseling students on certificate, vocational, associate degree, and transfer programs;
• Meeting the special counseling needs of underrepresented student populations;
• Interpreting career assessment results and advising for appropriate course scheduling
• Participating in the enrollment, retention, and transfer of EOPS students disadvantaged by language, social, economic and educational opportunities;
• Assisting in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as EOPS orientations, assessment, counseling and follow-up services;
• Participating in Progress Monitoring activities and student follow-up with faculty and referral to on-campus resources/student support services;
• Teaching counseling courses such as career planning, college and life management, academic success, and college introduction;
• Planning and implementing College Success workshops and activities;
• Serving on college-wide committees and attending faculty meetings, as necessary to support and enrich EOPS programs and activities, and participating in student success initiatives;
• Assisting with program review and student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
• Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
• Developing and maintaining an inclusive work environment that fosters diversity, respect and engagement.
• Providing support services in addition to those provided by the college;
• Maintaining close working relationships with faculty, feeder high schools, community and other student services support programs; and
• Complying with District policies and procedures in the performance of all duties.
• Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students.
• Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
• Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning; and
• Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse
academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and

• Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work or career development; and
  One of the following below:
  • (1) Nine semester units of college course work predominantly related to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; or

  • (2) Six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; and
• All candidates must have two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages; or

• A valid California Community College Credential; or

• The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:

• Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
• Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
• Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
• Related work and professional experience;
• Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities;
• Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
• Experience working in EOPS;
• Experience coordinating community college based grant funded programs and/or categorical programs;
• Experience working with students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, students with disabilities, veterans, and/or single parents;
• Experience with reporting to an outside governing agency;
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and conflicting demands;
• Demonstrated ability to conduct and develop educational workshops;
• Proficient utilizing available computer applications and technology related to program coordination, counseling, and instruction;
• Commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and a team approach to serving students;
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and counsel persons of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds;
• Successful counseling experience in a community college; and
• Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
178 - 181 duty days per year, contingent upon funding. Duty days will be prorated based upon start of assignment.

Salary and Benefits:
