Physician (Sports/Upper Extremity Orthopedic Surgeon)

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet VHA policy eligibility requirements and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Qualifications To qualify, applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the announcement. Pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met prior qualification standards at the time of initial appointment are deemed eligible. United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when recruiting qualified citizens is not possible). Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved VA school. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board‑certification eligibility. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other U.S. residency training followed by at least five years of verified U.S. practice. Residents in accredited ACGME/AOA programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full physician license and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; they are not independent practitioners. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional requirement: Board‑Certified Sports/Upper‑Extremity Orthopedic Surgeon with Total Shoulder/Joint replacement experience. Preferred experience: Fellowship training in Total Joint Replacement and Revisions with experience developing outpatient and revision joint programs. Physical requirements: visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and ability to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, lift and push for extended periods. Must pass a pre‑employment physical exam and perform all duties without restriction per VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Duties The Salisbury VA Medical Center seeks a Board‑Certified Sports/Upper‑Extremity fellowship‑trained Orthopedic Surgeon with Total Shoulder experience. The physician is responsible and accountable for comprehensive surgical/clinical services and compliance with established policies within the Department of Surgery/Orthopedic section. In partnership with the Administrative Officer and section chiefs, the incumbent must manage administrative, clinical, educational, and research activities. Administrative duties include attending staff meetings, communicating up and down the chain of command, and preparing briefs on adverse patient outcomes. Clinical management includes indirect patient care: open encounters and consults, CPRS documentation, and clinic management monitoring. Maintain involvement in clinic productivity, performance measures, quality and patient safety oversight, and process improvement initiatives. Provide compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care promoting health, preventing illness, treating disease, and caring at end of life. Apply biomedical, clinical, and social science knowledge to patient care and education of others. Use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills to establish professional relationships with patients, families, and the health‑care team. Commit to continuous professional development, ethical practice, and sensitivity to diversity. Teach, monitor, and coordinate educational activities, supervise trainees, and support the Robotic Core Program. Conduct research and development, identify problems, plan and execute research programs, and produce reports suitable for publication.
