Description O CWA - Central New York's Water Authority is currently seeking candidates for a Instrumentation Mechanic I to join the Operations department.
The work involves responsibility for performing skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of all instrumentation equipment in a large water purification treatment system. An employee in this class is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all electronic, hydraulic, electro-mechanical and pneumatic equipment used in the operation of a large water treatment system. Supervision and assignments are received from an administrative superior. The nature of work assigned and the skill level of an employee in this class, call for employees to work with considerable independence. Work is reviewed through satisfactory equipment performance. Supervision is exercised over a small number of skilled and semi-skilled subordinates. Does related work as required. Civil service job # 61750. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES Installs and maintains instrumentation equipment such as flow meters, level and pressure sensors, transmitters, receivers, tone equipment indicators, recorders and chemical feed. Recommends to superiors changes designed to improve the efficiency and economy of operations. Maintains comprehensive and accurate records of all maintenance work performed on instrumentation equipment. Maintains and repairs digital computer equipment, such as analog to digital converters, contact input/output boards, line printers, teletype and magnetic tape equipment. Applies basic knowledge of computer principles in analyzing recorded information as it relates to the installation and maintenance of instrumentation equipment. Supervises the work of subordinates in the maintenance and installation of instrumentation equipment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of the operations and functions of instrumentation and communications equipment. Skill in the use of tools necessary to repair and maintain such equipment. Ability to plan future layouts, provide realistic cost estimates and ability to correspond with manufacturer's representatives regarding future expansion or improvements to existing facilities. Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Employee will need to have a good understanding of Instrumentation logic and installations. Basic computer programming skills are preferred. Employee will also need to have a basic understanding of low voltage electrical wiring as well as basic plumbing and mechanical skills. Employee will need to be able to perform confined space entries and pass all physical requirements to do so. Ability working at heights is preferred. When on-call for the instrumentation group in the Operations department, employee will need to have good troubleshooting skills after hours and be able to make sound judgement calls.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS When at OCWA: Two (2) years of permanent, non-competitive-class status in the title of Pump Maintenance Worker or; Five (5) years of full time work experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of electrical mechanical, heating or air conditioning systems, or the electrical and instrumentation equipment utilized in water and/or sewage treatment, such as, low and medium voltage switch gears, flow meters, motor controllers, and level recorders. SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State non-COL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated. The Onondaga County Water Authority is a civil service agency under the jurisdiction of the Onondaga County Department of Personnel. Hiring is in accordance with Onondaga County and New York State civil service regulations. Many of the positions at OCWA are "competitive," which means that the applicant must have successfully completed a competitive examination given by the Onondaga County Department of Personnel and appear on an eligibility list derived from the examination. Notices of upcoming exams and eligibility requirements can be found on Onondaga County's web site or by contacting the Personnel Office directly. Other positions at OCWA are "non-competitive," which means that no examination is necessary. However, specific training and/or experience qualifications are required to be employed in these positions.
