Registered Nurse - Liberty Labor and Delivery - Full Time - Days

Job Description The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an ongoing partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age‑specific. The RN adheres to the American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and to the scope of practice described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. Responsibilities Assessment Demonstrates the nursing skills to complete a holistic assessment of the patient’s physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs using The Christ Hospital Professional Practice Model. Understands signs, symptoms, and data related to the patient’s presenting needs and potential nursing diagnoses. Recognizes and appropriately reports abnormal data and changes in the patient’s condition to the physician and charge RN. Utilizes appropriate handoff methods to collaborate with other healthcare team members to communicate pertinent patient data. Assesses patient, family, and environment for safety risks, proactively seeking and performing safety initiatives. Diagnosis and Planning Utilizes collected data to establish and prioritize a list of actual and potential patient problems and needs. Prepares, coordinates, and revises a multidisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with the patient and family, setting measurable goals for each problem. Communicates the plan of care using SBAR and handoff processes with all team members. Establishes priorities of care, discusses the plan during shift report, and participates in care conferences. Initiates discharge planning upon admission and makes appropriate referrals consistent with anticipated length of stay. Implementation Performs and delegates nursing actions based on appropriate orders, demonstrating critical thinking and accountability for implementation. Provides ongoing, individualized holistic patient and family education based on needs and plan of care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates critical thinking when reviewing physician orders, making appropriate referrals, and contacting other health team professionals. Responds to emergency situations requiring immediate, precise skillful action. Implements measures to prevent contamination and transmission of disease, using appropriate protective devices and equipment. Evaluation Continuously evaluates nursing practice relative to the plan of care and evidence‑based standards. Evaluates effectiveness of nursing care interventions, adjusting or continuing the plan based on patient and family responses. Maintains continuity of care by continuous evaluation during handoff reports, rounding, and transfers to other units or post‑care facilities. Documentation Accurately and concisely documents the nursing process in the patient’s electronic medical record, reflecting the plan of care. Documents information timely, according to hospital policy, including the plan of care, accurate updates, teaching, and patient/family responses. Leadership and Professional Development Demonstrates leadership skills: motivation, education, delegation, and mentorship of peers and team members while effectively managing patient and family care. Assumes responsibility for personal professional growth and contributes to the development of peers and colleagues. Participates in staff meetings and council meetings (75% attendance), unit‑based improvement activities, evidence‑based projects, research initiatives, and task forces. Supports self and peers in professional growth using resources within and outside The Christ Hospital. Acts as a resource, educator, and preceptor for multidisciplinary team members, staff, and nursing students, documenting competency. Maintains competency in point‑of‑care testing for unit‑specific nursing practice. Encouraged to participate in professional advancement programs, specialty certifications, professional organizations, research activities, and community service. Employee Responsibilities Complies with organization and department policies and required training. Completes all educational requirements to maintain competency related to the patient population and regulatory agencies, including Healthstream education and annual education day. Submits required tests and paperwork promptly without management intervention. Follows time and attendance policy; maintains accurate records, uses badge for clock‑in/out, and requests tie‑off in advance. Qualifications Knowledge and Skills – RN demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide age‑and culturally‑specific patient care and education, effective communication, confidentiality, continuous professional growth, adaptability, and cultural competency. Education BSN required within five years of hire for nurses hired after January 2010; prior nurses with 20+ years experience may pursue BSN voluntarily. MSN or DNP not required but supersedes BSN requirement. Years of Experience – None required. Licenses & Certifications – Current Ohio nursing license; BLS required prior to patient contact; ACLS required within six months in step‑down/ICU; specialty certification expected within five years of eligibility; membership in professional organizations is desirable.
