Aluminum Welder

Welding Position The general purpose of this position is to weld simple to complex components and/or structures while meeting all safety, quality, and schedule requirements. Responsible for various types of weld preparation, welding, and weld finishing operations to accomplish welding in accordance with customer drawings and specifications. Requirements Proficient in assigned aluminum welding techniques, including weld fillets, gusset toe and wraps, frame wraps and termination Demonstrated ability to weld into corners / vertical intersections with minimal blending Ability to evaluate and correct basic weld pick up, with minimal supervision Basic knowledge in assigned welding techniques Basic knowledge of wire and filler material applications for various steel alloys and aluminum Working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters (amps, volts, etc.) Working in compliance with all safety, quality, environmental and health requirements. Job Requirements Must be able to pass eye test and workmanship qualification test. Must be tested and fit for respirator use. Willing to work any shift and overtime as required. Education and/or Experience High school diploma required. Minimum of 5 years of proven experience in a welding trade is required. Shipyard experience is preferred, but not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to take direction and follow instructions Good mechanical aptitude with ability to produce consistent quality Ability to inspect and correct basic weld pick-up without supervision Ability to work independently and as part of a team Problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills Excellent hand-eye coordination; good spatial orientation Ability to consistently meet production deadlines Ability to use conventional and precision measuring instruments Ability to pass a skills evaluation test to demonstrate welding ability Ability to weld in uncomfortable positions where applicable Ability to work on beams, scaffolding, ladders and confined spaces. Ability and willingness to work with and to teach less-skilled workers Ability to maintain and perform routine preventive maintenance on welding equipment Physical Requirements: Frequent standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed. Physical ability to lift, push, pull and carry 50+ lbs., bend, stoop and climb scaffold and work on elevated work surfaces, beams, ladders, and confined spaces. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, talk, or hear. The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on-board ships. Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee's work area. The noise level in the work environment can vary and is often loud.
