JOB OVERVIEW
MartinFed is seeking an experienced, hands‑on Director of Finance & Corporate Controller to serve as the Company's senior‑most finance and accounting leader, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This position combines the responsibilities of a Corporate Controller with select senior‑level financial management functions, overseeing accounting operations, monthly financial closing, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and federal government contracting compliance.
The Director of Finance & Corporate Controller serves as the CEO's principal financial and accounting advisor, providing timely, accurate, and actionable financial information to support executive decision‑making, operational performance, profitability, and the Company's long‑term growth objectives. The successful candidate will be a proactive, results‑driven financial leader capable of independently managing day‑to‑day accounting operations, supervising accounting personnel, identifying financial risks, and providing meaningful financial analysis and strategic recommendations to executive leadership.
This role requires a hands‑on working leader who takes ownership of financial operations, ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, maintains effective internal controls, and continuously improves financial management systems and processes. The individual will also oversee federal government contract accounting and compliance while supporting the Company's continued growth and evolving financial management needs.
Essential Functions
Financial Leadership & Management: Direct and manage all accounting and financial operations, policies, procedures, and internal controls. Serve as the CEO's principal financial and accounting advisor, providing recommendations regarding financial performance, operating risks, profitability, cash flow, strategic planning, and opportunities for improvement.
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting: Own and manage the complete monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closing processes. Oversee general ledger accounting, journal entries, accruals, adjustments, allocations, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, maintain proper accounting records and audit trails, and investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies and reporting errors.
Monthly Closing & Management Reporting: Establish and maintain a disciplined closing schedule with defined responsibilities, deliverables, and reporting deadlines. Prepare and review monthly financial statements, including the Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flows, and supporting financial schedules. Develop monthly financial reporting packages for the CEO and senior management, including explanations of significant variances, emerging risks, and recommended corrective actions.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis: Lead the preparation and administration of annual operating budgets in coordination with the CEO and business unit leadership. Prepare monthly and quarterly financial forecasts, revenue and expense projections, cash‑flow forecasts, and rolling financial projections based on contract performance, backlog, staffing, indirect costs, and business development expectations. Analyze actual results against budgets, forecasts, prior periods, and operating expectations to identify financial trends, operational inefficiencies, margin erosion, and opportunities to improve profitability.
Federal Government Contract Accounting & Compliance: Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) requirements, Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) when applicable, and other federal contracting financial requirements. Oversee government contract cost accounting, direct and indirect cost classifications, cost allocations, indirect cost pools and rates, including Fringe, Overhead, and General & Administrative (G&A). Prepare and monitor provisional billing rates, actual indirect rates, and incurred cost submissions when required. Ensure accurate contract cost reporting, labor accounting, timekeeping controls, and reconciliation of contract‑related financial transactions while maintaining accounting practices and internal controls that support Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) and Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) requirements.
Cash Management, Banking & Working Capital: Oversee daily cash management activities, monitor the Company's cash position, and prepare short‑term and long‑term cash‑flow forecasts. Monitor accounts receivable, collections, accounts payable, working capital requirements, debt obligations, loan covenants, and borrowing availability. Manage banking relationships, account reconciliations, and financial institution reporting. Recommend strategies to improve cash conversion, collections, payment timing, working capital performance, and overall liquidity.
Payroll, General Ledger & Internal Controls: Direct and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll accounting, labor distribution, fixed asset accounting, depreciation, leases, and related financial functions. Ensure accurate and timely processing of financial transactions, appropriate segregation of duties, and effective controls to prevent fraud, duplicate payments, unauthorized expenditures, and accounting errors. Coordinate with Human Resources and payroll service providers to ensure accurate payroll processing and financial compliance.
Financial Systems & JAMIS Prime: Serve as the Company's primary financial and accounting subject matter expert for JAMIS Prime. Oversee its financial and accounting functions, including general ledger structure, project accounting, cost pools, allocation methods, monthly and annual closing, financial reporting, and accounting controls. Maximize system capabilities, maintain financial reporting integrity, and support integration with Power BI and MartinFed's evolving Enterprise Financial Management System (EFMS). Identify opportunities to automate accounting processes, reduce manual spreadsheet dependencies, improve reporting efficiency, and strengthen financial visibility through dashboards, predictive financial analysis, and management reporting capabilities.
Audits, Tax Compliance & Financial Governance: Serve as the primary operational point of contact for external auditors, accountants, tax advisors, banking partners, and other financial stakeholders. Coordinate annual financial statement audits or reviews, prepare supporting schedules, and support federal, state, and local tax filings in coordination with external tax professionals. Maintain accounting policies, documentation supporting related‑party transactions and financial disclosures, and records in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, contracts, and Company policies. Identify financial compliance risks and recommend corrective actions.
Executive Financial Analysis & Performance Management: Develop and deliver comprehensive monthly financial reporting packages and performance dashboards to the CEO and senior management. Present clear analysis of revenue, gross margin, EBITDA, net income, cash flow, indirect rates, contract profitability, backlog conversion, labor utilization, indirect cost absorption, and overall financial performance. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), explain significant financial variances, and provide actionable recommendations to improve operational performance, financial accountability, forecasting accuracy, and strategic decision‑making.
Strategic Planning & Business Growth: Support the CEO in evaluating business opportunities, capital expenditures, financing decisions, potential mergers and acquisitions, business valuations, and long‑range business plans. Prepare financial models and scenario analyses to support strategic initiatives, investments, and the Company's continued growth. Collaborate with Contracts, Program Management, and business unit leadership to ensure financial compliance, accurate contract reporting, and sound financial management.
Accounting Team Leadership & Continuous Improvement: Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting and finance personnel while maintaining a hands‑on working management approach. Establish and maintain effective financial policies, accounting procedures, reporting standards, financial approval processes, and documentation requirements. Continuously evaluate financial processes, systems, and controls to improve accuracy, efficiency, accountability, and financial visibility.
