The Medical Assistant 1 performs multi-skilled tasks to assist with patients' healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The Medical Assistant 1 provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The incumbent adheres to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The MA provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurture a compassionate and healing environment. The MA works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.

6. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
7. Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami's standards, guidelines, relevant statues, rules, and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice.
8. Accepts and provides focused constructive feedback and guidance with loving kindness in a manner that provides growth and maintains self-esteem.
9. Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information.
10. Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed.
11. Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physician's care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.
12. Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient's medical record.
13. Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work.
14. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties.
15. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB SUMMARY
Provides clinical and administrative support to the Pediatric Neurology Division by managing provider in- baskets, coordinating the Fast Track Clinic, processing medical records, obtaining prior authorizations for medications, imaging, EEGs, and Video EEGs, maintaining EMR documentation, and serving as a preceptor to junior Medical Assistants.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Manage assigned EPIC In-Basket messages, including:
a. Test results
b. Patient calls
c. Staff messages
d. Patient advice requests
e. Prescription refill requests
f. Scheduling-related messages
2. Process medical records requests and complete patient forms.
3. Perform additional administrative and clinical support duties, including:
a. Coordinate with providers and insurance carriers to secure required approvals before scheduled
procedures.
b. Receive, process, distribute, and maintain incoming and outgoing faxes.
c. Scan and upload patient documentation into the electronic medical record (EMR).
