Mechanical Engineer

Your Role at BSI

As part of a Mechanical Engineering team with more than 200 years of combined industry experience, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with seasoned professionals, develop technical expertise, and contribute to challenging projects across multiple industries. BSI is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in the design of HVAC, plumbing, and utility systems for clients in the specialty chemical, renewable chemical, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, consumer products, and/or aviation sectors. Mechanical Engineers contribute to the successful delivery of industrial projects from concept through construction. Working directly with clients and internal project teams, you will develop code-compliant mechanical system designs that support operational goals, safety, reliability, and long-term performance. Projects range from new facility development to upgrades and expansion of existing operations.

To support collaboration, mentorship opportunities, and effective project execution, BSI Engineering has adopted a hybrid work schedule in which employees are in the office a minimum of three days per week.

Responsibilities and Scope

• Deliver schematic design, design development, and construction documents for mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, and building utilities. 
• Coordinate with clients, project managers, and design disciplines to align technical solutions with project objectives, scope, budget, and schedule. 
• Travel to client sites to gather and document field data for evaluation of existing systems and conditions.
• Prepare detailed drawings and specifications in compliance with building codes and industry standards including NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and ASME standards.
• Prepare Airflow & Instrumentation Diagrams, Process Flow Diagrams, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Pressurization and Zoning Diagrams, and Fire Protection Coverage Plans.
• Prepare engineering calculations, documents, and equipment specifications to meet the scope or work while applying good judgement and engineering principles for HVAC, plumbing, steam, hydronic, and compressed air systems. 
• Generate detailed equipment specifications, complete technical bid evaluations, and approve final equipment selections and drawing submittals.
• Assist in development of overall plant layouts indicating anticipated mechanical equipment and clearances required, ductwork layout, and pipe routings. 
• Ensure discipline's design is accurate and coordinated within the 2D drawings and/or 3D model and/or site scans.
• Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• Apply innovative technologies and methodologies to incorporate industry standards, client standards, and client preferences into a design.
• Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations and drawing preparation. 
• Create and implement standard work instructions and value engineering initiatives to drive continuous process improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering 
• 8+ years of experience in consulting engineering
• Knowledgeable about industrial mechanical engineering practices including HVAC, hydronic, steam, compressed air, and dust collection. 
• Experience with HVAC load calculation software
• Thorough understanding of the applicable building codes, standards, and industry best practices
• Field Exposure to various manufacturing and industrial environments
• PE license is preferred but not required
