About the Position

Job Title: Med Surg/Tele RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Infusion/Oncology Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Yes Certifications: BLS (AHA) Must-Have: Must have acute care experience and comfort with complex patients. Prefer prior travel experience. Must have experience with drips. Description: Unit has 27 beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day/evening and 1:6 during nights. On rare occasions, the ratio may increase to 1:7 if working short-staffed. Common diagnoses include oncology/hematology, general medical issues, GI bleed, PE/DVT, sepsis, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and weakness. No oncology or chemotherapy knowledge is required. Internal nurses manage treatment needs. RNs are required to titrate drips, including insulin, heparin, cardizem, nitroglycerin, amiodarone, and octreotide. RNs are also responsible for managing and titrating blood transfusions as needed. Centralized telemetry techs monitor and read strips; nurses are not required to do this but should be tele aware. Charge nurses and House Supervisors are present on all shifts. The charge nurse takes a modified patient assignment, with different ratios for day and night shifts. Travelers may be asked to step into charge roles if comfortable, especially during night shifts. Nurse aides are available on the unit, with varying ratios depending on the shift. A respiratory therapist oversees multiple units and is in-house 24/7. Scheduling will accommodate requests but block scheduling cannot be guaranteed. Weekend requirements include every other weekend. Holiday requirements are two out of three during winter and every other holiday at other times. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating is primarily within med-surg units. Floating is done in four-hour increments for observer needs or tasking. Current scrub color is any color without logos from other health systems. Unit-specific orientation is defined as one day of training followed by on-the-floor experience.
