Direct Support Professional (DSP) – One-on-One Stroke Recovery Support

At Thoroughways , we believe everyone deserves individualized, compassionate support that promotes independence and a meaningful life. We specialize in supporting adults with brain injuries and other neurological conditions in their homes and communities.

We're looking for a dependable, compassionate Direct Support Professional to support a man recovering from a stroke in his home. This is not your typical DSP position.

You'll work one-on-one with one participant in a relaxed home setting, helping him continue making progress toward greater independence while building a genuine relationship.

He actively participates in physical, occupational, and speech therapy, making this an excellent opportunity for students or graduates interested in nursing, PT, OT, speech therapy, psychology, social work, exercise science, or other healthcare careers. Previous experience is helpful, but we provide participant-specific training.

Schedule

• Full-Time: Three 12-hour shifts (8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
• Part-Time: Various shifts available
• Immediate openings for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

What You'll Do

• Provide one-on-one support in the home and community
• Assist with medications (Med Manager)
• Support personal cares, mobility, meals, and daily routines
• Encourage independence and community participation
• Assist with appointments, therapy carryover, and recreational activities
• Complete electronic documentation and communicate with the support team

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Iowa Community College Medication Manager Certification (required)
• Experience in healthcare, human services, or direct support is preferred but not required
• Nursing and healthcare students are encouraged to apply

Requirements

• At least 21 years of age
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
• Reliable transportation
• Ability to assist with personal cares and mobility
• Comfortable using a smartphone and completing electronic documentation
• Ability to pass all required criminal, abuse, and employment background screenings
