General Description Under the direction of the Chief, District Police, the District Police Officer will perform police patrol, preliminary and follow-up investigative duties; protect District property and personnel. This is a Full-Time 12-month position. The initial salary placement will be $76,440. Working Hours: Rotating shifts and days off. 10-hour shifts. The District currently has the following shifts: Shift A: M-Th - 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Shift B: M-Th - 2:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Shift C: Tue-Fri - 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Shift D: M-Th - 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Shift E: Wed-Sat - 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Note: The College of the Sequoias Community College District serves a diverse community of learners and is a designated Hispanic Serving Institution. Job Duties Patrol school property, grounds, streets and parking facilities for the prevention and detection of crimes relative to the campus. Prepare and maintain police files, logs and reports regarding preliminary and follow-up investigations, vehicle collisions and related matters. Assure physical security of District property after school hours; check doors, windows, locks and alarms. Issue citations for violations of college ordinances and state laws. Contact, stop and identify suspicious persons on campus and adjacent streets; conduct field interview cards as needed; interrogate suspects involved in previous crimes. Establish and maintain contact with students and the general public; cooperate with local law enforcement agencies in prevention, control, and investigation of illegal activities affecting college personnel, students and facilities. Process crime scenes; conduct on-scene investigations to obtain physical evidence and statements of witnesses for making arrests or criminal prosecutions. Conduct initial and follow-up investigations of incidents on campus; testify in court as necessary. Provide services including vehicle lockouts, escorts, CPR and first aid to accident victims, fingerprinting employees, applicants and suspects; contact students and faculty regarding emergencies. Utilize defensive equipment including sidearm, aerosol irritant, baton and handcuffs. Direct traffic as necessary. Utilize the District's integrated software in performing duties. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience): Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and successful completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) basic course within the past three years or currently employed full-time as a California Police Officer or deputy sheriff. Licenses and Other Requirements Valid California driver's license. Incumbent must be insurable at the standard rate by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification. Candidates will be subject to a thorough medical and psychological examination and background investigation prior to employment. Vision 20/70 correctable to 20/20. No color blindness. Normal hearing. Working Conditions Environment: Indoor and outdoor; nights, weekends and holidays; possible overtime with additional compensation; routine repetitive duties; attend in-service training; work under adverse weather conditions. Physical Abilities 96 Yard Obstacle Course: Run a 99-yard obstacle course with turns and height obstacles; vault obstacles. Body Drag: Lift and drag a 165-pound dummy 32 feet. Fence Climb: Climb a 6-foot fence and continue running. 500 Yard Run: Run 500 yards. Note: The minimum acceptable composite score for all events is 384 points. The criteria may be waived if the applicant attended the academy within 12 months of appointment. Other Physical Abilities: Ability to communicate with students, employees and the public. Ability to read documents; Ability to sit and stand for extended periods; Ability to reach in all directions; Ability to lift moderately heavy objects; Ability to operate a computer and office equipment. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: Law enforcement procedures and applicable laws of the State of California. Self-defense techniques; policies and procedures regarding school parking and related matters. Emergency vehicle procedures; traffic directing procedures and flare patterns. District organization, operations, policies and objectives; fire safety and extinguishers; First Aid and CPR; record-keeping techniques; operation of a computer terminal; interpersonal skills. Abilities Patrol effectively, make arrests, lift fingerprints and detect and prevent criminal activity. Prepare and maintain files, logs and reports using correct English and grammar. Respond quickly in emergencies; deal effectively with juveniles and maintain relations with school personnel, police and the public. Remember names, faces and details; learn district rules and geographic layout; operate vehicles with manual/automatic transmissions. Control crowds and traffic; use defensive equipment; write and issue citations; swim and save drowning persons; work independently with little direction.
