About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute - Medical Surgical Duration: 18 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience License: Active state license required Certifications: BLS required Must-Have: Post-operative care experience Critical thinking skills Ability to ask for help when needed Good bedside manner Ability to work as a team player Description: The unit has 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN at night. Common patient diagnoses include post-operative surgical patients, trauma, overflow medical cases, and wound care. Duties may involve dressing changes, IV therapy, pain management, managing drains, NG tubes, and TPN. RNs are not required to titrate drips except for Heparin. There is a charge nurse and/or house supervisor present on each shift, and the charge nurse does not take an assignment. Patient care technicians assist with 7-10 patients during the day and 10-15 patients at night. RNs are not responsible for ventilators, but they do manage CPAP and high-flow oxygen. Telemetry patients are monitored, but RNs do not read their own strips. Staffing includes a central monitoring station. Shifts are scheduled from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM for days and 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM for nights. Weekend shifts require coverage every other weekend, and holiday shifts are rotated every other holiday. Traveling nurses may be the first to float, and they will float to units with matching experience levels. Scrubs can be of any color. Orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor and an additional 12-hour shift for a professional orientation.
