Vehicle & Equipment Technician I Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, perform mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of large and small City vehicles and equipment—including gasoline, alternative fueled, and diesel‑powered vehicles. Incumbents work under close supervision while learning job tasks. Vehicle & Equipment Technician II Under the direction of the Fleet Manager, perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair and maintenance of large and small City vehicles and equipment—including gasoline, alternative fueled, and diesel‑powered vehicles. Perform a broad range of duties with minimal instruction or assistance and handle more complex technical tasks. Essential Duties Inspect, diagnose, repair and maintain City vehicles and equipment such as police cars, fire engines, street sweepers and refuse trucks. Estimate time, materials and supply needs; monitor inventory; order, receive and maintain parts and supplies. Conduct preventive maintenance and required safety inspections; maintain accurate service and repair records. Overhaul, repair and adjust transmissions, differentials, gears, valves and transfer cases; rebuild engines and carburetors as needed. Service vehicles with fluids, replace water pumps, hoses, fuses and adjust brake systems. Diagnose and repair engine electrical and ignition systems, including batteries, starters, alternators, coils and related systems. Perform electrical repairs on emergency vehicle equipment and specialized equipment on police vehicles. Operate specialized diagnostic equipment, welding equipment and hand and power tools. Respond to emergency needs and work from verbal and written instructions. Communicate with City personnel and outside agencies. Fabricate parts as needed and maintain a clean, orderly shop area. Qualifications Knowledge of Techniques and practices used in the maintenance and repair of heavy and light vehicles and equipment. Operation, theory and principles of gasoline, alternative fueled and diesel engines. Methods, equipment, tools and materials used in vehicle repair and maintenance. Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and heavy‑duty equipment. Preventive maintenance practices. Technical aspects of the field of specialty. Shop math applicable to vehicle maintenance. Oral and written communication skills. Health and safety regulations. Record‑keeping techniques. Proper lifting techniques. Ability to Perform mechanical work on a variety of City vehicles and equipment. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical and computerized malfunctions. Operate specialized equipment used in vehicle repair or servicing. Interpret and apply applicable codes, rules and regulations. Perform electrical and acetylene welding, brazing and soldering. Work from plans, blueprints, sketches, specifications and diagrams. Estimate material requirements and order parts and supplies. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Work cooperatively with others. Observe health and safety regulations. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Meet schedules and timelines. Maintain records related to work performed. Education and Experience Possession of a high school diploma or GED and one of the following: One (1) year of experience in the servicing, maintenance and repair of light automobiles and/or heavy‑duty trucks. Successful completion of an accredited trade school in automotive or heavy truck repair. One (1) year of college‑level coursework in gasoline or diesel equipment maintenance or repair. Licenses and Certifications Valid California Class B driver’s license within 12 months of employment.
