Job Summary Performs skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System. Minimum Qualifications Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school. Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL‑A) with required tank endorsement. Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet Department standards. Conditional acceptance if candidate obtains a Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless already employed by the State. Negative result on pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen. Ability to lift/carry material up to 50 lbs. on intermittent basis. Availability via telephone or other communication means 24 hours per day. For those with a Class B (CDL‑B) license and who can obtain a Class A license within one year of hire, trainee status is an option if other minimum requirements are met. Preferred Qualifications Experience operating motorized highway equipment. Responsibilities Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance/construction equipment and vehicle components for road, seasonal, and emergency projects. Maintain assigned equipment, perform field adjustments, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting to ensure serviceability. Observe winter storm conditions and determine appropriate plowing or spread strategies based on safety and environmental policies; train and supervise entry‑level personnel. Supervise, train, and review work of small crews, entry‑level workers, and contractors to ensure safe and compliant methods. Perform routine highway and road maintenance activities under adverse conditions, ensuring the safety of the traveling public. Traverse varying terrain and perform heavy physical tasks, including drainage construction, building, and equipment repair; lift/carry up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Respond immediately to winter maintenance or other traffic emergency activities on a 24‑hour basis, throughout the year. Total Compensation and Benefits Hourly pay: $17.81 to $23.39 per hour, with trainee status at $17.19 per hour. Total compensation includes: Health and prescription drug benefits (HMO or POS).
