A day in the yard

The sun is barely up as you step onto the test track. With a diagnostic tablet in one hand and a multimeter in the other, you bring a newly assembled diesel-electric locomotive to life. You verify air brake response, validate engine performance, and listen for the subtle clues only a trained ear catches. You switch seamlessly between mechanical and electrical systems, recording precise data and dialing in instrumentation to prove everything operates as designed.

By midday, you’ve coordinated with production to clear a non-conformance, led a fast-moving troubleshooting huddle, and climbed into tight compartments to confirm readings. Later, you’ll operate tuggers, forklifts, or an overhead crane to position components, then guide the unit through track testing under strict safety protocols. At shift’s end, your signature on the test records says it all: this locomotive is ready.

What you’ll tackle
  • Commission and test electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems—diesel engines, air brakes, and cross-system interactions.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and correct defects across electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic domains.
  • Execute track tests while following all operational and safety rules.
  • Interpret technical schematics, flowcharts, gauges, and precision instruments; capture accurate test data.
  • Set up special instrumentation for validation and verification activities.
  • Operate locomotives and material-handling equipment (tuggers, forklifts, overhead cranes).
Advanced scope
  • Lead complex troubleshooting and develop corrective actions.
  • Assign and coordinate daily tasks to hit safety and schedule targets.
  • Partner with Quality and Production to surface findings and drive resolution.
Schedule
  • 1st: Mon–Fri, 6:00a–4:30p

  • Clear written and verbal communication for documenting and resolving non-conformances.
Preferred
  • Background working around high voltage and advanced test equipment.
  • PC proficiency (Windows, Microsoft Office).
  • Hands-on locomotive testing or closely related experience.
Physical and environmental realities
  • Strength: Lift up to 50 lbs.; work within confined spaces.
