Engineering Technician
Under general supervision, performs sub-professional engineering work in the office and field including drafting, acts as survey party chief, and routine calculating and does related work as required.
Examples of duties and responsibilities Under direct supervision to perform and complete a variety of engineering and construction related items. - Performs drafting and mapping assignments using manual or computer aided methods.
- Performs survey work including measuring distances and elevations with appropriate surveying equipment.
- Receives and researches inquiries regarding property records, maps, plans, and legal descriptions.
- Under supervision, reviews submittals for parcel maps, final maps, lot line adjustment and lot mergers.
- Copies data and prepares notices.
- Scans maps into computer system.
- Perform field inspections for private and public projects regarding water, sewer, storm and rod infrastructure to verify conformance with applicable codes.
- Assists with preparing estimates for sewer connections, sewer charges and extension costs.
- Gathers samples and performs routine tests on construction materials.
- Assists with and performs inspections of construction projects to verify compliance with specifications and plans.
- Drafts constructions plans from notes, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- May plot cross-connections, templates, and profiles.
- Prepares charts, diagrams, and visual display.
- Prepares real property maps.
- Assists with the preparation of job plans and specification for a variety of projects.
- Estimates cost of public right-of-way work.
- Issues permits.
- Provides fee estimates for developers.
- Performs plan checks and field reviews for public improvements in commercial and single-family projects.
- Performs a variety of additional engineering office and field support work.
- Serves as the Airport Commission and Airport Field Based Operations liaison.
- Identifies traffic and parking problems by investigating safety complaints and by conducting field surveys and analysis, summarizing the results for management review.
- Assist the Public Works department with planning, organizing, and managing the inspection, enforcement, pollution prevention, monitoring, and data management activities of the Storm Water Program in accordance with federal, state and local laws and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.
- Reviews encroachment permits, material submittals, and traffic control plans.
- Assists updating pavement management system.
- Provides daily logs, weather reports, and assists with construction management of capital improvement projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of engineering technical support work, including drafting, mapping, and property descriptions. Knowledge of engineering mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Knowledge of data collection and analysis. Knowledge of City permit issuing procedures and policies. Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices. Knowledge of the application and standard construction practices for installing sewer, water, storm drains, and street infrastructure. Knowledge of City traffic safety codes and requirements. Knowledge of project management practices and techniques. Skill in using computers and computer applications related to engineering work. Skill in using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Skill in the use of AutoCAD. Ability to perform a variety of office and field work in engineering. Ability to use drafting material and equipment. Ability to analyze and ensure the accuracy of property descriptions. Ability to develop and prepare accurate records, sketches, and notes. Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, civil plans, and property documents. Ability to estimate fees and issue permits. Ability to make accurate mathematical calculations. Ability to use a computer and computer applications to perform engineering support work. Ability to effectively represent the City of Brawley in contact with the public, contractors, developers, and other governmental agencies. Ability to attend meetings related to the work of an Engineering Technician, such as the Airport Commission meeting. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Training and Experience Equivalent to an Associate in Science (AS) degree in drafting/engineering or a related field. Two years of experience in civil engineering (or a closely related field) supplemented by completed coursework in algebra, trigonometry, geometry, drafting, topography, civil engineering, or other subject areas closely related to civil engineering. A four-year degree (BS) is given two years of experience credit. A current California driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
