Security Officer III

Job Overview Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors and staff. Enforces WVU Medicine policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment in support of the Security Program. Key Responsibilities Maintains consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide an information and directional resource for all patients, visitors and staff. Responds to requests for information/assistance in a caring, courteous manner. Provides physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access for patients, visitors and staff accessing WVU Medicine facilities. Monitors and maintains traffic flow in parking areas and roadways by assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits and warning violations. Protects people and property by assisting in prevention of accidents, theft and vandalism in accordance with system and department policies and procedures. Performs routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building and parking lot patrol. Reports suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons per system and department policy. Provides assistance during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, lost/found issues, as per policies. Responds and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during emergency situations such as assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents or disasters. Performs patient restraint as directed by clinical staff and is capable of physical intervention when appropriate. Operates hospital‑owned vehicles safely and responsibly, and ensures safe operating condition by performing vehicle inspections. Other duties may include incident reporting, routine building rounds, incident investigation, crowd control, disaster response, domestic disputes, media issues, victim assistance, traffic direction, policy enforcement, investigation of alarms, duress, physical intervention, tire changing, battery jumps, parking rounds, radio communication, escort services, vehicle assists, and more. Minimum Qualifications High‑school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of experience in the security field, or associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field and 1 year of security experience, or bachelor’s degree in same area and 6 months of security experience. Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid driver’s license. Certification in BLS or HeartSaver First Aid within 60 days of hire. State criminal background check and federal check as required. Excellent physical abilities: sit, stand, walk entire shift; lift, push or pull 80 pounds; tolerate adverse conditions. Completed training requirements for an armed security officer, including psychological evaluation, lethal weapon training, handcuffing tactics, AVADE Levels I‑III, and defensive tactics, ACT 235, OC spray, baton, taser user certification, and VA DCJS registration within 6 months of hire. Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited federal, state or local law enforcement academy. One year experience in a healthcare security environment. Attain TASER user certification within one year. Attain ACT 235 and all lethal weapon training within one year. Successfully pass WV DHHR Protected Services Record Check and WV CARES fingerprint‑based criminal background check. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, and walk for entire shift or double shift; lift, push or pull up to 80 pounds; tolerate adverse environmental conditions. Working Environment Employee will frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions while performing duties. Skills and Abilities Effective decision making and organizational skills. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to train Security Officers 1 & 2. Team player and contributor; maintain confidentiality. Ability to organize and maintain document controls.
