ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

Location: Olympia, WA

Unit Information: 107 beds, Combined ICU/PCU Unit

ICU: 10 beds, average census of 5 patients. Patients may require manual proning, intubation, paralysis, and multiple drips.
PCU: 22 beds. ICU nurses will care for PCU patients, which may be the majority of the contract.
Floating to other departments occurs based on staffing needs (MedSurg, ER, occasionally Mother/Baby for post-GYN surgical patients).

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years of experience in an ICU setting.
Travelers may be considered based on experience.
If applying for a Charge Nurse position, candidates must have experience as a charge nurse.

Patient Types

Common diagnoses: Sepsis, Pneumonia, COPD, CHF, GI Bleeds, ETOH/IVDA, SI, Psych, COVID.
Neuro: Stable CVA (no interventions required) and stable TBI cases.
CVICU care including Pacemakers, Angiograms, and post-cardiac catheterization.
Surgical patients from Orthopedic and General Surgery.
Manual proning and temporary pacemaker care are included, with no open-heart or neuro interventions.

PPE & COVID Considerations

COVID patients may be present in ICU, PCU, and MedSurg with staffing ratios of:

ICU: 1:2
PCU: up to 1:4

Required Certifications

BLS
ACLS
NIHSS

Skills Required

Strong peripheral IV skills
Cardiac rhythm interpretation
Invasive line management (CVP, A-lines)
IV medication titration
Ventilator, tracheostomy, and high-flow BiPap management knowledge (RT manages these devices)

Support on the Unit

CNA coverage: 1:12
Charge nurse functions with a partial patient assignment based on staffing.
Phlebotomy staff available for peripheral blood draws, although RNs may be asked to assist, especially during shortages.
Nurses responsible for central line draws.
Respiratory Therapists and Hospitalists available in-house 24/7.
Intensivists on-call 24/7.
Centralized monitoring with telemetry tech available round the clock.

Charting System & Equipment

EMR: EPIC (preferred)
IV Pumps: ICU Medical Plum Duo and Plum Single
Medication dispensing: Pyxis
Unit monitoring equipment: Philips monitors

Orientation

4 hours of orientation with the clinical educator including badge issuance, log-in setup, unit tour, and policy review.
3 shifts of direct unit orientation.
Telemetry competency is required and must be completed and passed prior to starting.

Scheduling

Self-scheduling with the manager balancing as needed.
Required to work 2 weekends a month, with flexibility depending on staffing.
Schedule provided 6 weeks in advance.
Standard shifts: 0700-1930 and 1900-0730.
Time off is approved up to 7 days, with extensions for reduced hours.
Holiday expectations include 1-2 holidays per season.
