Assistant Harbormaster

Seasonal Assistant HarbormasterUnder the supervision of the Natural Resources Director or their designee, Seasonal Assistant Harbormasters promote safe and environmentally friendly usage of the Town's waterways, respond to marine casualties and enforce applicable state and local laws. This is a part time seasonal position with varying shifts and schedules. Work is primarily performed outdoors on boats, docks and town ways to water.DutiesProvide on-the-water presenceResponds and assists in emergencies and operates in coordination with additional emergency responders as requiredAssists in marine search and rescue assignmentsProvide information and hospitality for mariners, residents and visitorsAssists in maritime based special events and or evacuations as directedPatrol and monitor waterways, piers and boat rampsAssists in providing appropriate actions to safeguard the harbor and anchorages in all aspects. Assists with ATONS, PTONS, and maintenance of safety buoysAssist in general maintenance of town owned vessels, docks, aids to navigation and equipmentOperate vessel and shoreside waste pumpout facilitiesCarry out special projects as assignedOther duties as assignedKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesWritten and oral communications, organization and planning skills, good social skills; operating boats, vehicles, tools and equipment safely and effectivelyFollow complex written and oral instructions. Clearly and effectively communicate with others, maintain accurate records, and provide information and assistance to the public. Good powers of observation and memory. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, work independently and prioritize tasks, work effectively under time constraints, swim, and deal with the general public tactfully, appropriately, and in a positive manner. Ability to work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays and eveningsRequirementsHigh school diploma or GED (additional marine education is desired)Valid MA divers licenseCPR and First Aid certification preferredHarbormaster Training Academy Certification desired, if availableSound decision making and problem-solving skillsSeamanship Skills: boat handling, towing, search and rescue, rigging, repair and maintenanceAbility to enforce rules and regulations impartiallyAbility to handle emergencies and adversarial situations in a calm and professional mannerBasic computer and office administrative skillsWorking ConditionsModerate, with occasional strenuous physical effort required of duties performed in the field with frequent exposure to adverse weather conditionsHas frequent contact with other Town departments, members of the boating public, fishing, and hunting communities, the Coast Guard, local, state and federal agencies, and the general public.
