School Bus Driver

First and foremost duty shall be the safe transportation of pupils from their homes to and from school. In carrying out this duty, every driver shall endeavor to gain and maintain the respect of each child. Drivers shall be responsible to the Superintendent of Schools through their Supervisor.

Performance responsibilities include:

• Checking daily the condition of the bus including brakes, steering gear, lights, signaling devices, emergency doors and tires. Have all defects corrected.
• Keeping the bus clean both inside and out, especially the lettering and signals.
• Keeping the bus at the proper fuel level.
• Securing discipline for the purpose of safety.
• Giving instructions and practicing to each of their routes which include instructions in the location, use and operation of the emergency door, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, and opening window as a means of escape in case of fire or accident.
• Making every effort to run the bus on the bus route and on the time schedule as established.
• Making and filing such reports as may be required.
• Attending safety meetings as required.
• Assuming control of the children while they are being transported and requiring from them respectable and orderly behavior. Particular attention should be given to the care and protection of the smaller pupils.
• Knowing and studying Missouri School Bus Driver's Manual in regards to bus driving standards and requirements.

Qualifications include:

• Driver must be 21 years of age or older at the date of employment.
• A driver must be in good physical and mental health, free from communicable disease and have normal use of both hands, both feet, both eyes, and both ears. The driver shall submit annually to a physical examination by a licensed physician designated by the local Board of Education and present the signed physical examination to the employer.
• Certification of the Missouri School Bus Driver Instructor Course.
• Ability to work with students, parents and professional personnel.
