Director of Grant Compliance

The Director of Grant Compliance is a senior executive responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the Foundation's global grant program. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this position ensures that all grantmaking activities align with the Foundation's mission, canonical and legal requirements, governance standards, financial stewardship principles, and applicable domestic and international regulations. As a strategic leader, the Director of Grant Compliance provides oversight of the full grant lifecycle, from due diligence and award approval through monitoring, reporting, auditing, and closeout. This role works collaboratively with finance and grant team members to ensure that grant funds entrusted to Catholic ministries and organizations worldwide are administered with the highest standards of integrity, accountability, transparency, and faithfulness to the teachings and mission of the Catholic Church.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership- Develop and lead a comprehensive grant compliance framework that supports the Foundation's mission, strategic objectives, and international grantmaking activities.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director and grants and governance committees on compliance, risk, and stewardship matters.
- Establish workflows and best practices to ensure responsible administration of charitable funds.
- Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and excellence throughout the grants team and among grant recipients.
- Direct and conduct due diligence reviews of prospective and existing grantees, including legal, financial, operational, governance, and mission-alignment assessments.
- Develop risk-rating methodologies and compliance protocols for grants of varying size, complexity, geography, and purpose.
- Evaluate organizational capacity, financial health, and programmatic effectiveness of grant applications.
- Identify and mitigate reputational, financial, operational, legal, and mission-related risks.
- Oversee compliance monitoring for an international portfolio of grants supporting Catholic ministries, dioceses, religious orders, educational institutions, evangelization efforts, and related apostolic works.
- Ensure timely collection and review of financial reports, narrative reports, outcomes data, and supporting documentation from grantees.
- Implement monitoring systems to verify that grant funds are used for approved charitable purposes.
- Conduct compliance reviews, minor audits, and performance evaluations as appropriate.
- Lead investigations of compliance concerns or suspected misuse of grant funds.
- Ensure grantmaking activities comply with applicable U.S. tax laws, IRS regulations, anti-terrorism financing requirements, anti-corruption standards, sanctions programs, and nonprofit governance requirements.
- Maintain grant compliance documentation and records supporting organizational audits and regulatory reviews.
- Monitor developments in nonprofit, philanthropic, and international grantmaking regulations.
- Review grant budgets and expenditure reports of funded organizations.
- Recommend corrective action plans when grant compliance deficiencies are identified.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Finance and Operations on annual audits and assist with grant compliance-related reporting requirements.
- Ensure funded activities remain consistent with the Foundation's mission, values, and grant making guidelines.
- Evaluate organizations and proposed initiatives for alignment with Catholic teaching and the Foundation's strategic priorities.
- Work collaboratively with ecclesial leaders, diocesan officials, religious communities, and Catholic nonprofit partners worldwide.
- Promote responsible stewardship of resources entrusted for the service of the Church and the advancement of evangelization.
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing grants team.
- Provide training and guidance to staff and grantees regarding compliance expectations and best practices.
- Drive continuous improvement through process optimization, technology implementation, and data-informed decision-making.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's Degree required; Master's degree or equivalent in nonprofit management, business administration, public administration, or a related field, preferred; A minimum of 5-10 years of progressively responsible experience in grant management, compliance, auditing, risk management, nonprofit governance, or related discipline. A minimum of 5 years of senior leadership or executive level management experience in a philanthropic, nonprofit, or public sector organization. Experience working with Catholic foundation, dioceses, religious orders, and other faith-based nonprofits. OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES- A high level of organizational and interpersonal skill is required.

- Ability to communicate effectively with fellow staff and partner organizations/grantees.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the board of directors. Confidentiality is essential.
- Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts such as adding, dividing, and multiplying.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and time demands.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; working knowledge of Excel.
- Must be able to work well with various personalities within the Catholic Church.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The working hours of this position are somewhat flexible and adhere to company policy. Must be willing to work in conditions of stress and function well under pressure.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
