Manual Machinist

This role involves operating and maintaining manual machining equipment such as lathes, mills, and grinders to produce precision metal and plastic parts. The Manual Machinist uses mechanical expertise and a strong understanding of machining techniques to work to exact specifications, relying on the ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints to achieve high-quality, accurate components.
Responsibilities
- Operate manual machining equipment, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders, to cut, bore, grind, and shape metal and plastic parts to precise dimensions.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics to determine workpiece specifications, tolerances, and machining requirements.
- Monitor the machining process to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to required tolerances throughout production.
- Select appropriate cutting tools and tooling for each job, set up machines, and perform tool changes and adjustments as needed.
- Carry out turning operations on lathes, including facing, tapering, threading, and grooving, in accordance with specifications.
- Perform boring and drilling operations to create precise holes and openings in workpieces.
- Use grinders and other finishing tools to achieve smooth surface finishes and accurate final dimensions.
- Maintain machining equipment by performing routine maintenance, identifying issues, and carrying out minor repairs to keep machines in optimal working condition.
- Follow established safety protocols, use proper protective equipment, and maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
- Collaborate with engineers and other team members to meet production goals and resolve technical challenges as they arise.
- Contribute to quality assurance efforts by inspecting parts, verifying measurements, and making necessary adjustments to maintain product standards.
- Proficiency in operating manual lathes, milling machines, and grinders for precision machining.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
- Solid understanding of manual machining techniques, including cutting, boring, grinding, and shaping metal and plastic parts.
- Experience with turning operations such as facing, tapering, threading, and grooving on lathes.
- Skill in boring and drilling operations to produce accurate holes and openings in workpieces.
- Capability to perform surface finishing using grinders to achieve smooth finishes and precise dimensions.
- Competence in setting up manual machines, selecting appropriate cutting tools, and performing changeovers efficiently.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance, including monitoring machining processes and verifying dimensions.
- Mechanical aptitude for maintaining machinery, troubleshooting issues, and performing minor repairs.
- Strong adherence to safety practices and the ability to maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Experience with braiding or related metalworking processes is an advantage.
- Comfort working closely with engineers and cross-functional production teams.
- Ability to adapt to different machining tasks and materials while maintaining accuracy.
- Effective communication skills to discuss specifications, issues, and improvements with team members.

Work Environment
This role is based in a production and workshop setting that uses manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, and related tools to manufacture metal and plastic components. You work on the shop floor around industrial equipment, following established safety protocols and using appropriate protective gear. The workspace is organized to support efficient workflows, with a focus on keeping machines well-maintained and the area clean and orderly. Dress typically includes practical, safety-conscious attire suitable for a machining and manufacturing environment.

This is a Contract position based out of Pell City, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
