The Phlebotomist II (Float) supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection across multiple locations as needed. This role combines hands-on phlebotomy, specimen processing, and patient interaction with responsibilities in troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. The Phlebotomist II ensures accurate, timely, and compliant specimen handling while delivering courteous and professional service to patients and clinical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure comfort and understanding.
  • Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles, maintaining high standards of safety and accuracy.
  • Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and specific test requirements.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order and laboratory protocols.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens correctly for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes.
  • Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport as outlined in specific protocols to preserve specimen quality.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards.
  • Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen records in the appropriate systems.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance requirements.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information as authorized to satisfy inquiries.
  • Assist with troubleshooting phlebotomy and specimen processing issues and escalate concerns as appropriate.
  • Participate in training and support of colleagues by sharing best practices and demonstrating proper techniques.
  • Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and enhance the overall quality of laboratory services.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience performing venipunctures and blood draws in a clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and process a variety of specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
  • Strong proficiency in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens according to test requirements.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms or computer labels to specimen tubes with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Solid understanding of phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Capability to update and maintain accurate patient information and laboratory records.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients and respond to telephone inquiries.
  • Customer service skills to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and clinical staff.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Approximately 2–4 years of overall related experience in a laboratory, phlebotomy, or healthcare setting.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and composure.
  • Familiarity with laboratory workflows, including specimen processing and transport procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand physicians' orders and translate them into correct specimen collection and processing steps.
  • Comfort using basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and related devices.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks while meeting turnaround times.
  • Problem-solving skills to assist with troubleshooting specimen and workflow issues.
  • Willingness to float between locations or departments as needed to support operational needs.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and patient care.

Work Environment

This position operates in a clinical laboratory and hospital setting that is fast paced and patient focused. The Phlebotomist II works with standard laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage units, and uses computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite to manage patient and specimen information. The role involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, as well as handling biological specimens under strict safety and regulatory guidelines. The float nature of the position may require working at multiple sites and adapting to varying workflows and team environments while maintaining consistent quality and professionalism.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Doylestown, PA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
