Behavior Research Specialist

Job Overview We are looking for a Behavior Research Specialist (Levels I, II) to join our Insourcing Solutions team located in Poolesville, MD . This role is part of the DVR program and involves maintaining, monitoring, and providing the necessary care to meet the needs of lab animal psychological well‑being and behavioral health. The specialist also ensures the health and physical environment of animals, supports IACUC/Ethics Committee activities, and helps comply with animal welfare regulations and external funding requirements. Job Description Reviews, comprehends and complies with all SOPs and quality assurance standards pertaining to the specific area. Conducts behavioral assessments on non‑human primates as requested. Establishes pairs/social groups and monitors for compatibility, maintaining the required goal of the QASP. Uses positive reinforcement to train animals for various husbandry and veterinary procedures. Participates in discussions pertaining to enrichment. Evaluates and implements novel behavioral data collection methodologies. Prepares for incoming shipments of NHPs and works with animal care managers/staff on husbandry adjustments. Organizes and maintains related data and demonstrates proficiency using computer programs; enters and interprets data in spreadsheets for analysis. Performs all other duties as assigned by management. Occasional work with other species such as ungulates and mice. Job Qualifications Level I Education: Bachelor’s degree (BS) in a scientific discipline or an Associate’s degree (AS/AA) with related practical experience. Experience: Minimum of three (3) years in a laboratory animal setting, with at least one (1) year of NHP experience preferred. Experience performing animal observations and behavioral assessments, and understanding positive reinforcement training is highly desired. Level II Education: BS or MS (preferred) degree in a scientific discipline or an Associate’s degree (AS/AA) with related practical experience. Experience: Five years’ experience in a laboratory animal facility, with at least two (2) years of NHP experience. Performing animal observations and behavior assessments, and understanding positive reinforcement training is highly desired. Pay Range $33.00 to $35.00 USD per hour.
