Custodian

Position Overview The Custodian serves the Department of Housing and Residence Life, maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and excellence in all assigned buildings, including residence halls, dining areas, and other buildings. This essential role supports essential operations during emergencies and university closures. Responsibilities Clean and sanitize buildings by sweeping, mopping, striping, waxing, and buffing; move furniture for cleaning as needed; remove trash and waste on a scheduled basis. Communicate daily with custodial supervisors; report injuries, safety concerns, and maintenance needs. Repair small custodial equipment and maintain area supplies; perform other duties as assigned by supervisory leadership or the Community Director. Qualifications No minimum education or experience requirements. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and read chemical labels. Apply basic mathematics for measuring and mixing chemicals. Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment usage and safety precautions. Physical ability to stand, stoop, lift, and operate cleaning equipment; ability to recognize and report maintenance needs. Physical Requirements Communicating with others; lifting objects up to 50 pounds; operating machinery or power tools; performing repetitive motions with wrists, hands, or fingers. Environmental Hazards Exposure to fumes or airborne particles; handling toxic or caustic chemicals. Work Schedule 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, with after‑hours and weekend requirements for events or emergencies. Security Sensitive This is a Security Sensitive Position.
