Healthcare Careers Pathway Intern

WPMG, the medical group for Kaiser Permanente of Washington, is committed to building a future healthcare workforce that reflects the populations we serve. WPMG's Healthcare Career Pathways program (HCCP) builds on Kaiser Permanente's health equity goals by creating educational and workforce development pathways for students interested in pursuing health careers that require advanced degrees and have the greatest impact on community health, especially public health practice and research, and clinical careers such as mental health, nurse midwifery, optometry, medicine, pharmacy and dentistry. The Healthcare Careers Pathways (HCCP) Interns are an integral part of the HCCP team's efforts to increase the number of Washington state students prepared for advanced health careers. Interns coordinate, deliver and improve HCCP's core programs for college and high school students, represent student/young professional perspectives in program development and implementation, act as peer mentors to HCCP participants, contribute to designing and implementing HCCP's strategy, and generate new knowledge for the program. Interns act as facilitators for HCCP's core college programs, which include a choice of:

1. Virtual Rounds (VR), which introduces pre-clinical students to various specialties in medicine.
2. Future Public Health Leaders, a similar group-based survey of specialties in public health.

After completing one of the introductory courses, HCCP college students can move on to: 3. Clinical shadowing - Up to 50 hours over 8-10 weeks 4. A 10-week simulated patient care course, Kaplan's iHuman (r). The HCCP experience culminates in one-on-one mentoring with a WPMG clinician while applying for health professional school. HCCP Interns provide course leadership, day-to-day administrative coordination, and peer coaching during all of the above experiences. Internships are part-time, up to 20 hours per week with a minimum of 10 hours per week. Interns must be available to commit to a minimum of one year. Outgoing interns will train and orient incoming interns as they begin. Internships require a hybrid of remote and in-person work. In-person locations will include the Kaiser Permanente Washington Headquarters in Renton, WA and occasional activities at medical centers around the Puget Sound region. In-person work includes group meetings, celebrations, and staffing HCCP's annual Continuing Medical Education program for KP clinicians. The below Duties and Responsibilities are a general framework of the required work. HCCP makes every effort to match specific duties to the strengths and interests of the intern. Compensation The pay for this position is $23 per hour.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Administration and Execution Recruit, select and register students in or from Washington state to join HCCP programs. Schedule health professional speakers/panelists/discussants for virtual programs. Encourage student participation in virtual sessions, monitor student assignments, and encourage successful completion of programs. Lead or co-lead class sessions as intern familiarity with the programs increases. Support shadowing, mentorship, and multiple high school programs as needed by HCCP staff. Maintain the Teams-based infrastructure of HCCP. Assist the HCCP Team in Understanding Student Perspectives Serve as first point of contact for students enrolled in programs. Represent current student interests and concerns to HCCP staff. Assist the HCCP College Programs Advisor in identifying potential student referral sources, such as college student organizations in Washington that support students through tutoring, STEM, health careers advising, etc. Help conduct one-on-one interviews with enrolled students and focus groups on factors which impede, and/or support students from similar backgrounds in pursuing post-graduate training in health care careers. Support relationship-building with organizations promoting student representation in STEM. Participate in Program Improvements and Strategy Development Represent student needs, based on lived experiences and observations while leading HCCP classes. Develop recommendations for process improvements. Co-design new programs as needed, as capacities allow. Participate in meetings with external collaborating organizations and internal program operations meetings. Share information with the BIPOC Health Careers Ecosystem, a non-profit convener for health, education and other professionals that collaboratively supports the development of career opportunities for students from backgrounds under-represented in medicine. Generate New Knowledge Formally evaluate current programs using survey data and student input. Research and connect HCCP with best practices around the country, including from social media. Support presentations about HCCP, as time and resource capacities allow. Personal Development Develop professional skills, such as communication, organization, accountability. Meet regularly with the Medical Director and Program Manager to support career development. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum: College senior, Graduate Student, or recent graduate (last 4 years)

PREFERRED

Recent college graduate who has successfully completed at least 2 HCCP college programs
