Machinist

This role requires an experienced machinist who can independently set up and operate a variety of machine tools, interpret complex blueprints, and perform precise calculations to produce high-quality components. You will act as your own process engineer and programmer at the machine, using your knowledge of G-code, feeds and speeds, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure parts meet specifications and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform shop math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and geometric, algebraic, and trigonometric calculations to support machining operations.
• Carry out metric conversions accurately to interpret drawings and specifications in different measurement systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and GD&T symbols to determine part requirements, tolerances, and machining sequences.
• Set up and operate vertical lathes, horizontal lathes, boring bars, and mills, including vertical mills, to produce precision components.
• Calculate appropriate feeds and speeds for various materials and tooling to optimize efficiency and tool life while maintaining part quality.
• Apply a strong understanding of geometric tolerancing to ensure parts conform to dimensional and positional requirements.
• Use calipers and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and ensure parts meet specifications throughout the machining process.
• Edit G-code directly at the machine to refine programs, adjust toolpaths, and correct issues, functioning as your own programmer and process engineer.
• Utilize conversational controls when available to create or adjust programs at the machine (experience with conversational controls is considered a plus).
• Handle large parts, often 20 inches or more, safely and efficiently, including assisting with rigging and overhead crane operations when needed.
• Monitor machine performance, identify issues, and make adjustments to maintain quality and productivity.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and safety procedures.
• Collaborate with team members and leadership to meet production schedules, support continuous improvement, and ensure on-time delivery of customer orders.

Essential Skills

• Ability to perform shop math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and geometric, algebraic, and trigonometric calculations.
• Ability to perform accurate metric conversions for machining and inspection tasks.
• Minimum of 5+ years of setup machining experience, with flexibility to consider candidates with less experience who demonstrate a strong attitude and aptitude.
• At least 3+ years of experience reading blueprints and applying GD&T in a production environment.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and geometric tolerancing requirements.
• Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Experience with G-code and M-code, including editing programs at the machine.
• Hands-on machining experience with vertical lathes and horizontal lathes.
• Experience operating vertical mills and horizontal lathes, including Haas cells or similar equipment.
• Skill in using calipers and other precision measuring tools for inspection and verification.
• Ability to calculate feeds and speeds for various materials and tooling.
• Capability to act as your own process engineer/programmer at the machine, without relying on an in-house programmer.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with conversational controls is a plus.
• VTL (vertical turning lathe) experience is highly desirable.
• Experience with boring bars is preferred.
• Rigging experience with an overhead crane is a plus, especially for handling parts 20 inches or larger.
• Familiarity with horizontal machining operations and large contract machining environments.
• Comfort working with Haas cells consisting of vertical mills and horizontal lathes.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, positive attitude toward learning and continuous improvement.

Work Environment

The machining floor is open and well lit, with operations organized into Bay 1 for large contract machining and Bay 2 for production work using Haas cells that include vertical mills and horizontal lathes. The environment involves working with large parts, often 20 inches or more, and may include rigging with an overhead crane. You will work directly at the machines, editing G-code and operating vertical lathes, horizontal lathes, boring bars, and mills in a modern, well-organized shop setting.

Pay and Benefits
