Library Assistant
The Library Assistant provides direct support to library operations, ensuring that materials are organized, patrons are assisted with services and resources, and programs are successfully implemented. This position plays a key role in delivering quality customer service and maintaining a welcoming library environment. The Library Assistant reports to the Assistant Library Director or the Library Director.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Library Assistant is the entry-level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required but are not expected to function at a high skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have limited related work experience.
The Library Technician is a full working-level in the class series. This position is distinguished from the Library Assistant classification in that the Library Technician is a full working-level role, requiring advanced library knowledge, independent judgment, and proficiency in both technical and customer service functions. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Library Assistant level.
The Senior Library Technician is the advanced technical and supervisory level in the class series. This position is distinguished from the Library Technician by its higher level of responsibility, which includes overseeing daily workflows, providing advanced reference and technology support, and training and guiding other staff. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the library. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Library Technician level.
The Library Specialist is the leadership and subject expertise level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Senior Library Technician by its focus on leadership, subject expertise, and responsibility for developing, coordinating, and evaluating library services and initiatives. Demonstrates a clear understanding and is proficient with all duties and requirements of the library and are normally filled by advancement from the Senior Library Technician.
Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions.
- Shelve and organize library material, maintain orderly book stacks and ensure the book drop is cleared regularly.
- Assist patrons with locating materials, provide basic reader's advisory, and support access to library services, databases, and the catalog.
- Issue library cards, respond to routine inquiries and make phone calls related to overdue items, damaged items, and holds.
- Support library programming by assisting with setup, implementation, cleanup, and by contributing program ideas; may independently lead programs with approval.
- Provide basic computer assistance to patrons, including help with internet use, email, and common software.
- Collect and record statistical data as directed.
- Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment by enforcing the library's code of conduct.
- Assist with processing books and materials for addition to the catalog.
- Assist with library service at another branch or on the bookmobile.
- Drive bookmobile as assigned with required Class B Driver License.
- Represent the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relations with staff and the public.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs are the attributes required to perform a job; generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.)
Knowledge of:
- Basic computer skills including familiarity with internet browsers and office software.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Technique for dealing with the public via telephone or in person.
- Modern office practices, methods and computer equipment.
- Basic record keeping principles and practices.
- State laws, rules, and regulations that pertain to commercial driver operations and transportation.
- Safe driving practices.
Skill in:
- Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Organizing, communicating and problem-solving.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities.
- Operate a commercial vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
Ability to:
- Follow instructions and collaborate as part of a team.
- Provide excellent customer service and effectively assist patrons with diverse needs.
- Work independently, exercise sound judgment, and multitask in a busy environment while maintaining productivity during slower times.
- Exercise proficiency in phone etiquette and professional communication.
- Maintain bookmobile in clean and safe condition.
- Learn a designated bookmobile route including stops and traffic hazards.
Education and Experience: Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
Valid Driver License required.
Class B Driver License required to drive the bookmobile and may be provided by the County.
High school diploma or equivalent and previous experience working with children and/or teens in an educational, recreational or customer service setting preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish desired. Notary License a plus.
