Industrial Maintenance Mechanic

This recruitment may be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates to fill future Industrial Maintenance Mechanics at the West Point Treatment Plant Career Service vacancies within the Wastewater Treatment Division over the next six months.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of journey-level mechanics at the West Point Treatment Plant, performing both planned and unscheduled maintenance while honing your mechanical skills in an industrial setting. You'll play a critical role in keeping essential systems running smoothly, contributing directly to the health and sustainability of the Puget Sound region. Working as part of a team, this person will apply their maintenance experience to perform high-level repairs on a variety of rotating mechanical equipment, including but not limited to: biosolids decanting blowers, influent and effluent pumps, biogas scrubbing compressors, gearboxes, conveyance systems, and multiple piping systems. The ideal candidate is goal-oriented and contributes to a safe, collaborative, and positive work environment. They will support a team culture focused on effective communication, working closely with other groups, and following good shop practices to maintain a high standard of workmanship.

Job duties include performing maintenance, repair, and overhaul of a wide variety of complex mechanical machinery, installing, maintaining, and repairing large plumbing and piping systems, fabricating, modifying, and repairing plant piping and other heavy equipment, safely operating a variety of hand, power, and pneumatic tools, leading or mentoring less experienced mechanics or helpers, and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include extensive knowledge of the safe use, care, and operation of hand, power, and pneumatic tools, strong knowledge of plumbing techniques and principles, proficient knowledge of welding techniques, skill in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, schematics, manuals, and technical instructions, knowledge and practical experience with rigging, hoisting, and safe operation of overhead cranes and lifting devices, and ability to lead or mentor less-experienced mechanics or helpers.

Competencies include decision quality, optimizing work processes, managing conflict, driving engagement, demonstrating self-awareness, and self-development.

Required licenses/certifications include a valid Washington State Driver's License. It would be great if you also bring experience working collaboratively with diverse teams across multiple trades and departments in an industrial or wastewater treatment setting, demonstrated ability to lead or mentor less-experienced mechanics, proficiency with computers and software for equipment diagnostics, maintenance tracking, and technical documentation.

Physical requirements include flexibility to work varied hours and report during adverse or inclement weather conditions, lifting and carrying equipment and materials up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders in and out of tanks, and working in confined spaces. Workplace exposure includes working outdoors and indoors in an industrial wastewater environment under all weather conditions, exposure to chemicals, biohazards, and high noise levels, and entry into confined spaces and use of appropriate personal protective equipment, including respirators, as needed.

Working conditions include the West Point Treatment Plant - 1400 Discovery Park Blvd, Seattle, WA 98199, a 40-hour work week, and union representation by SEIU 925.
