The Role

As part of the Core Products Business Unit (CPBU) Systems Software team, you will join a high-leverage engineering initiative dedicated to transforming upgrade workflows and lifecycle operations. Our goal is to shift hardware upgrades from manual, support-intensive workflows toward a safer, guided, automated self-service experience integrated directly into Pure1.

In this role as a Systems Software Engineer (MTS3), located on‑site in Santa Clara, CA, you will build dedicated systems infrastructure and controller‑upgrade automation for our next‑generation upgrade framework. You will bridge on‑array software execution with cloud‑guided operations, eliminating manual choreography and runbooks while maintaining uncompromising standards for safety and availability.

What You’ll Do

• Design & Build Upgrade Infrastructure: Architect, implement, and maintain high‑reliability systems software components for controller‑upgrade automation and the next‑generation hardware upgrade framework.
• Automate Upgrade Workflows: Transition complex hardware replacement and upgrade tasks into repeatable, self‑service workflows, significantly reducing support and field dependencies.
• Engineered Safety & Resilience: Build robust state machines, health checks, workflow orchestration, pre/post‑upgrade validations, failure‑handling mechanisms, and automated recovery paths.
• Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with internal services, Pure1 cloud teams, and the global CPBU engineering units to deliver an end‑to‑end guided experience.
• Testing & Pipeline Validation: Develop comprehensive test strategies, regression coverage, and CI/CD automation, such as Jenkins, across diverse hardware and software combinations.
• Observability & Telemetry: Establish actionable operational metrics for upgrade execution time, manual intervention, error modes, and telemetry.

What You Bring

• Strong hands‑on development and coding skills in C++ and Python.
• Solid foundations in distributed systems, high availability (HA), storage architectures, hardware lifecycle, or embedded/platform software.
• Demonstrated experience designing state machines, workflow orchestration, health checks, error handling, and operator guidance for critical systems.
• Exceptional debugging skills across multi‑layered system boundaries, spanning software, hardware, and distributed services in reliability‑sensitive environments.
• Experience establishing test strategies, automated validation across hardware/software combinations, and working with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proven track record of driving cross‑functional alignment across technical partners.
• Willingness to work on‑site in Santa Clara, CA, to engage directly with hardware, lab environments, and local team members.
• Familiarity with storage protocols and architecture (NVMe, iSCSI, PCIe, NUMA), HA failover design, array controller replacement dynamics, or server/CPU hardware architecture is a plus.

Salary ranges are determined based on role, level and location. For positions open to candidates in multiple geographical locations, the base salary range is reflective of the labor market across the applicable locations.

This role may be eligible for incentive pay and/or equity.

$149,000 - $224,000 USD
