Distribution Systems Designer

Role summary / purpose

Responsible for meeting with customers to determine electric needs and requirements. Design jobs to install, replace, or remove distribution facilities to support customer requests, reliability projects, or infrastructure improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Manage multiple distribution projects for new residential and commercial businesses
• Meet with customers to determine their service needs
• Design overhead and underground line extensions
• Estimate costs and prepare construction drawings
• Coordinate construction commits
• Coordinate and lead pre-design and pre-construction meetings with internal and external stakeholders
• Perform engineering calculations to aid in planning and corrective measure projects (load studies, revenue justification, fault current, voltage drop, etc.)
• Provide leadership and technical support to local operations and contract compliance with regards to distribution design standards and practices
• Aid local Right of Way agent with acquiring permits and ROW documents

Requirements - education & experience

• Associate or Bachelor's degree in a related field (will also take a Technical Diploma)
• 4-7+ years of experience
• Strong expertise in utility design and field practices

Required skills

• Design complex distribution systems and projects
• Advanced load calculations and system planning
• Coordination with engineers, project managers, and field crews
• Review and approve drawings, designs, and specifications
• Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards compliance

Nice-to-have / preferred skills

• Drafting background
• Experience in Construction
• Experience in Management
• Experience with GDT/GIS
• Familiarity with Structural Analysis
• Experience with Pole Foreman
