Custodian Position at Harris County Precinct One

There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county's government. Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One.

What you will do at Precinct One:

We are seeking a highly reliable, dedicated, and detail-oriented Custodians to support the cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day maintenance of its buildings, offices, and facilities. This role is critical to ensuring that all assigned locations are well-maintained, secure, and presentable for staff and the public.

The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, demonstrates strong accountability, and can consistently perform duties with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards. Please note that our Custodians must be available to work on-call and have the flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required to meet operational demands.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Perform daily custodial care of assigned buildings, offices, and facilities in accordance with established schedules
• Maintain a clean and orderly environment by washing windows, walls, desks, tables, and benches; polishing metalwork and wood surfaces; and dusting furniture
• Perform floor maintenance, including sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, and shampooing carpets
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, mirrors, and toilets; empty trash receptacles; and restock soap, paper towels, and other supplies
• Move, set up, and arrange furniture and equipment to support meetings, events, and operational needs
• Ensure the security of facilities by properly locking windows, doors, and gates; promptly report any incidents of vandalism, damage, or theft
• Communicate effectively with staff regarding special custodial needs and facility concerns
• Maintain basic records of completed work and request supplies in accordance with established procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned to support overall facility operations

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience:

• Minimum of one (1) year of relevant custodial or maintenance experience
• Valid Texas Driver's License required

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Working knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, and custodial equipment
• Ability to follow schedules, complete tasks independently, and maintain consistent quality standards
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety
• Ability to safely operate basic maintenance and cleaning equipment
• Dependability, professionalism, and a strong work ethic are essential

Work schedule & environment:

• Candidates must be available to work on-call and have the flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required to meet operational demands
• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings
• Regular exposure to dust, fumes, odors, and cleaning agents
• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, elevated areas, and potentially hazardous materials

Physical demands:

• This is a physically active position requiring frequent standing, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling
• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
