SALARY : $83,009.89 - $138,349.74 annually Definition Under general supervision, plans, assigns, reviews, and manages high‑risk casework and directs the day‑to‑day activities of a group of professional Family Safety Practitioners ensuring mandated services are provided for the protection and wellbeing of vulnerable populations in a timely, accurate, courteous and effective manner and in accordance with federal, state and local policies, laws, and procedures and social work practices; provides direction, guidance and training on policy and best practices for all programs; and performs related work as required. Distinguishing Characteristics This is the first‑line supervisory level of the class series. The Family Safety Supervisor I is distinguished from the Family Safety Supervisor II in that the Family Safety Supervisor II oversees multiple project teams within mandated services, whereas the Family Safety Supervisor I directs the day‑to‑day activities of a group of professional staff. Duties Provides day‑to‑day guidance and direction to a group of Family Safety Practitioners on case related issues, policies and procedures, and agency initiatives; Ensures acceptable levels of quality and quantity in the delivery of services; Plans caseloads, assigns cases and reviews case records and signs off on service plans, case assessments, and other reports which require supervisory review; Develops, revises, and implements policies, procedures, and protocols to address gaps in service delivery; Identifies crisis situations and provides intervention as needed to address difficult or dangerous client situations; Interviews job applicants and makes recommendations for hiring, prepares and conducts formal and informal performance evaluations, and handles performance and discipline issues in a timely manner and in accordance with County personnel policy; Approves and monitors expenditures for client services consistent with the program budget and client outcomes; Evaluates the effectiveness of policies and procedures and recommends changes; Develops and implements ongoing team training plans; Works with the community to identify families, children, and vulnerable adults needing services and to coordinate these services; Participates in intra and interagency work groups, supervisors' meetings and special projects; Prepares or oversees and presents narrative and statistical reports documenting the work of the unit and or in relation to case activity; Promotes the attainment of agency and individual staff goals related to service access components through ongoing monitoring of service requests and subsequent service delivery; Establishes and maintains ongoing collaborative relationships with public and private providers, community‑based groups, and residents to coordinate and integrate services, improve access, and identify community needs and barriers to service delivery. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Extensive knowledge of organizational and management principles, methods, and problems; Extensive knowledge of regulations, laws, policies and guidelines relating to social service specialization and ability to apply them; Extensive knowledge of safety administration and oversight for vulnerable individuals; Thorough knowledge of social work and casework practice and supervisory principles; Knowledge of diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions and therapeutic techniques; Ability to accurately apply, interpret and administer relevant regulations and guidelines; Ability to support decision making with the legal team on client safety issues; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to use automated technology; Professional ethics and confidentiality; and Effective working relationships with diverse individuals. Employment Standards and Qualifications Minimum Education : Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field or any field with a minimum two years of appropriate experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia). Certification : Positions may require specific certifications or training within a specified period; state‑mandated functional training to be completed within a set timeframe. Special Requirements : New County employees must complete a criminal background check and a Child Protective Services Registry check. Driver’s license or other reliable transportation for client visits; bilingual competency in English and a second language may be required.
