Instructional Aide

Reports To: Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)

Job Goal: To provide support to the instructional program within assigned classrooms with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of students; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills
2. Associate's Degree or completed a minimum of 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours of study at a regionally accredited institution of higher education or,
3. A passing score Alabama State Board of Education WORKKEYS Assessment. Assessment is taken at employee's expense.

Skills and Physical Abilities:

• Good physical and emotional health, adequate strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping and bending, as may be required to implement behavioral management programs for students of varying ages and sizes.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• The employee must have physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, reflexes, grasping, pushing, pulling, lifting, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and push or pull up to 50 pounds.
• Physical care consisting of toileting, changing clothes, feeding, etc for student
• Transfer students to and from class in wheelchair or lifts utilizing techniques as directed by physical therapist.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1. Maintain security and confidentiality of all student and staff personally identifiable information in regards to outlined requirements in Board policy, Blount County Security Use Agreement, Responsible Use Policy, FERPA and any and all state and federal laws and statues.
2. Monitor students with special needs across all settings (e.g., classroom, field trips, lunchroom playground, during life enrichment activities, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
3. Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of a supervising teacher (e.g., reinforcement of individualized education program (IEP) goals and objectives, etc.) for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives as well as providing an opportunity for all students receiving special services to participate in classroom activities.
4. Provide, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g., math groups, science experiments, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, sensory room activities, social skills training, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing individual plans; and enhancing opportunities for all students to succeed.
5. Support teachers in the administration of tests as well as completion or review of school work.
6. Assist medically fragile students with physical disabilities for the purpose of maintaining student's personal hygiene.
7. Assist students with special needs transferring to and from bus, classes and activities incorporated in the daily routine as assigned by the supervising teacher.
8. Attend meeting and in-service presentations (e.g., emergency procedures, training models, system and local professional development, etc.) for the purpose of gaining information relative to job functions.
9. Collaborates with supervising teacher(s) or other staff as assigned for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues, and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.
10. Confer with teachers (special education/primary and/or inclusion teachers on a regular basis for the purpose of accountability and assisting in evaluating student progress and/or Implementing IEP objectives.
11. Implement, under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral intervention plans (BIP) for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning skills, concepts, strategies, etc.
12. Maintain materials for the purpose of ensuring students are prepared for instruction.
13. Perform record keeping, data collection and entry as well as clerical functions (e.g. checking papers, maintain daily logs, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher in providing necessary records/materials.
14. Respond to emergency situations (e.g., students that are: running, fighting, displaying inappropriate behavior, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
15. Maintain confidentiality.
16. Be regular and punctual in attendance.
17. Maintain proper and professional relationships with students and other employees.
18. Perform duties in a manner that will promote good public relations.
19. Assume other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Terms of employment: 182-days

Daily work schedule will be determined by the principal or his/her designee for the necessary operations of the school assigned. Work assignments and schedules are subject to change.

Salary: Approved salary schedule for Instructional Aides is located on the Human Resources webpage. Annual salary is based on a 40-hour week with daily full-time equivalent of 37.5 standard work hours.
