Respiratory Therapist

Overview Licensed Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Direct Hire. Location: Elmira, NY, Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Shift: Evening (72 hours per pay period). Status: Full-time with an available sign-on bonus for a 3-year commitment. Salary / Schedule details: Hourly rate: $33 - $50.50 per hour, based on experience. Sign-On Bonus: $25,000 for a 3-year commitment. Direct Hire Competitive Salary: Based on experience Full-time Responsibilities Provide respiratory care services in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols and policies and procedures under the supervision of the System Director or designated charge therapist. Maintains knowledge of various methods of oxygen delivery, adjusts delivery devices to the patient’s age and condition, assesses side effects, and follows the oxygen therapy protocol. Assess, implement and document respiratory care needs for patients post-discharge as appropriate. Administer respiratory therapy treatments via various modalities for medication delivery, volume expansion and bronchial hygiene, per patient age and departmental protocols; understand purposes and possible side effects. Initiate, maintain and discontinue mechanical ventilators (invasive and non-invasive); perform associated procedures such as airway management and suctioning, as appropriate for patient age. Perform arterial and capillary blood sampling, label and transport specimens, and document results; analyze blood gas specimens and troubleshoot analyzers; follow critical value procedures. Perform pulmonary function testing per ATS guidelines. Prepare patients and equipment for bronchoscopy, assist during procedures, process specimens post-procedure, and maintain physician performance standards. Obtain a 12-lead EKG of good quality and document results. Perform functional checks on respiratory therapy equipment (CPAP, BiPAP) and document. Transport oxygen tanks, clean and process respiratory therapy equipment, and replenish RT equipment as needed. Obtain nasal specimens for influenza A, Bordetella Pertussis and RSV; transport to Laboratory and document appropriately. Patient Rights and Professionalism Follow Patients Rights and maintain confidentiality; access only necessary patient information. Adhere to health policy for patient identification prior to administering medications, treatments, procedures or sampling blood. Document all pertinent information in the patient chart and charges with accurate time documentation; communicate clearly with patients and families. Demonstrate professionalism in appearance and conduct; attend mandatory in-services, department meetings, and assume responsibility for own actions. Assist with learning needs of students and the orientation of new employees; may assume the role of charge therapist when assigned and delegate tasks appropriately. Risk Management & Quality Improvement Adhere to infection control, universal precautions and safety policies; use personal protective equipment appropriately. Participate in Quality Improvement activities; identify opportunities for improvement in communication and teamwork. Education & Experience Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by the State of New York or eligible; Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist by NBRC or eligible (within 12 months of obtaining the NYS Technician License). One year of recent experience as a Respiratory Therapist preferred. CPR Requirements Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire date.
