Child Welfare and Health Policy Pediatric Fellowship The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is seeking applicants for its 6th annual Child Welfare and Health Policy Pediatric Fellowship. This one-year paid fellowship will fund the eight hours per week contributions of a practicing pediatrician to AAP’s growing portfolio of child welfare policy work. The fellow will provide critical clinical expertise and experience working with children and families involved in the child welfare system to inform and shape AAP’s expanding leadership role in the child welfare policy community. Fellowship Description Provide clinical expertise to inform AAP’s child welfare policy work. Review relevant medical and public health literature to support development of AAP written materials. Collaborate with AAP staff and partners on projects of mutual interest, including data analysis and story collection. Educate pediatricians, other health professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders on key issues in child welfare policy from a pediatric perspective. Contribute clinical expertise to support AAP education of policymakers and partners. Write reports, briefs, op‑eds, blogs, and other materials on key issues at the intersection of pediatrics and child welfare policy. Support collaborative child welfare policy work with AAP chapters. Work closely with the Senior Director of Federal Advocacy & Child Welfare Policy and Manager of Strategic Federal Policy Projects to develop, implement, and monitor strategic action plans on AAP child welfare policy priorities. Specific Fellowship Activities Advising AAP policy staff and partners on the intersection between clinical best practices in caring for children involved in the child welfare system and public policy. Attending relevant child welfare events and recording notes to share with AAP’s federal advocacy child welfare staff. Drafting reports, memoranda, articles, and presentations on child welfare policy issues impacting children’s health. Tracking child welfare legislation and policy notices. Researching and synthesizing medical and public health literature to inform AAP’s educational materials on child welfare policy. Speaking at events to educate policymakers, child welfare professionals, and health professionals about key issues in child welfare policy, including the Family First Prevention Services Act. Analyzing child welfare and child health data and developing visual representations and written analyses to inform AAP, partner, and policymaker discussions. Joining AAP policy staff for targeted educational meetings with Congressional and executive branch policymakers and staff. Exploring opportunities to publish child welfare policy and child health research in peer‑reviewed journals using existing datasets. Representing AAP in meetings and at events related to child welfare policy. Supporting AAP efforts to engage AAP chapters and leaders in child welfare policy. Mentoring pediatricians interested in child welfare policy. Assisting with facilitating the Child Welfare Policy and Pediatric Learning Collaborative sessions. Fellowship Requirements At least five years of clinical patient care with direct experience caring for children involved in the child welfare system. Board‑certified pediatrician or pediatric sub‑specialist who is a Fellow of the AAP (FAAP). Participation in the Child Welfare Policy and Pediatric Learning Collaborative MOC curriculum unless already completed. Commitment to 8 hours weekly, including one virtual “in‑office” fellowship day each week for at least 4 consecutive hours. Use a portion of the fellowship award to travel for two trips for engagement with the AAP Federal Advocacy team, which may include in‑person meetings in Washington, DC or AAP conferences. Excellent writing, policy analysis, and project management skills. Ability to assume a full range of delegated responsibilities, work independently and as part of a team, exercise good judgment, and display initiative. Work primarily virtually, traveling for meetings and events as needed; fellowship may include travel and some weekend work.
