SENIOR SPECIALIST, RESEARCH SAFETY – Research Compliance, Research Safety – Boston University, Boston, MA Position Type: Full-Time / Regular Salary Grade: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 Overview The Research Safety division of the Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for laboratory safety programs at Boston University and Boston Medical Center. The division develops, maintains, and implements safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with federal, state and local laws, standards, and other applicable regulations and best practices. The division assists the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Laboratory Safety Committee, and the Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee by providing reports, serving as technical subject matter experts, and assisting with the development of policies, procedures, and guidance documents. This position works closely with the assigned schools and departments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. The research safety specialists also perform laboratory design consultations, review and design of safe research experiments, implementation of safety policies and procedures, comprehensive laboratory verification inspections, review of activities involving the use of hazardous materials including infectious biological substances, recombinant DNA, hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, controlled substances; emergency action plans; health & safety training; guidance and training on transport and shipping of biological materials and chemicals; review of hazardous material use in research and experimental animal procedures; and coordination of visits and inspections by outside regulatory agencies. Qualifications Minimum 3 years of related experience. Degree (BA, BS or MS) in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Life Sciences, or Health & Safety. Certification designation in a health and safety or related discipline preferred (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Environmental Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, etc.). Proficiency with Microsoft Office and laboratory environment, handling of chemicals and hazardous gases, use of standard lab equipment, safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Ability to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team. Must have or obtain 24- or 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training. Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and in a team environment, and collaborate with various organizations within the academic community and outside regulatory agencies.
