Job Description

Position Summary:

One Architectural Historian (Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State Univesity (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML)

This is considered a senior-level position supporting Naval Base Guam (NBG) within Joint Region Marianas Area of Responsability.

Possibility for Remote with travel requirement. Position expected to last 12 months.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Provide professional cultural resources support for the evaluation, documentation, and management of historic buildings, structures, objects, and historic districts located on Naval Base Guam (NBG).
  • Conduct archival research, historic architectural surveys, NRHP evaluations, GIS and database management, field documentation, and technical report preparation.
  • Apply the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines and provide technical recommendations regarding the identification, evaluation, documentation, and treatment of historic properties within Guam military installations.

Position Location: Joint Region Marianas headquarters (Santa Rita, Guam) on the island of Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass. You will need to possess a Real ID or passport
  • Must be able to work long hours independently in remote, rugged field conditions under harsh weather conditions.
  • Position requires on-site support and field investigations.

Supervision:

May supervise as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in architectural history, Historic Preservation, History, Public History, Architecture, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum three (3) years of professional experience in historic preservation, historic architecture, cultural resources management, or architectural history.
  • Experience conducting historic architectural surveys, inventories, field documentation, and evaluations of historic buildings, structures, districts, and cultural resources, including use of GIS software, GPS equipment, databases, digital field documentation methods, and HABS/HAER documentation standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience applying National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria, including Determinations of Eligibility (DOE) and evaluation of contributing and non-contributing resources.
  • Experience conducting archival and historical research and preparing technical reports, historic property inventories, and supporting documentation consistent with federal and state historic preservation requirements.
  • Experience applying the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Secretary of the Interior's Standards, and other federal cultural resources compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate with SHPOs, federal agencies, consulting parties, and interdisciplinary teams while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, History, Public History, Architecture, Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Proven record of successfully preparing NRHP nomination packages that have been accepted by the National Park Service and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Experience conducting Cultural Landscape Inventories (CLI), Historic Property Inventories (HPI), Historic Architectural Surveys, Historic Context Studies, and Historic Resource Evaluations.
  • Proficiency with GIS software, GPS data collection, and geospatial analysis in support of historic preservation and cultural resources management projects.
  • Experience conducting cultural resources investigations in the Pacific region, including Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or other Pacific Island jurisdictions.
