Role Overview As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for minor and major repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment vehicles (such as snow‑fighting equipment and dump trucks), light vehicles (roadside trucks), and tools. You will diagnose and resolve problems in compliance with current procedures and safety practices, assist in major overhauls of gasoline or diesel engines, and repair complex automotive problems, including replacement or repair of pistons, rings, crankshafts, transmissions, and more. You will also be responsible for providing the necessary tools to complete all job duties. Location This position is with INDOT’s Rensselaer Shop. Pay Rate This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate between $24.26 and $35.18, which may vary with education and work experience. Mechanic Positions Candidates with a current Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and the endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements and then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training is provided onsite by certified INDOT staff. INDOT also provides a Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full‑time Mechanic positions. A Day In The Life Rebuild, replace, or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy‑duty trucks, and heavy equipment (eg. exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes). Perform minor repairs or related mechanical work (eg. adjust valves; change and repair all types of tires; clean or replace diesel injectors; repair or replace hydraulic components). Install snowplow blades and repair damaged plow assemblies. Perform minor body repair work. Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed and order or pick up parts. Service and repair highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal. Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them. Inspect vehicles and equipment for damage. Perform winter operations duties including snow and ice removal. Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers, sharpen blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records. Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled. Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings. Order and/or pick up parts when required by the supervisor. Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis. Coordinate work assigned by the Shop Foreman and report problems as needed. Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position. What You’ll Need For Success Must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within the first 90 days of employment. Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs. Ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment. Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions. Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures. A degree is not required. However, at least a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and one or more years of experience applying these skills in a similar role may be considered.
