Senior Umbrella Underwriter | AVP (Excess & Renewal) (Irvine)

Umbrella Executive Underwriter or AVP Underwriting Director

Zurich is looking for an experienced Underwriter with a sales mindset, strong technical underwriting skills, and a solution‑focused approach to join our Los Angeles team. The role focuses on extracting and renewing Umbrella business within the Excess Casualty/Umbrella business segment of the National Accounts division.

Responsibilities

• Act as a customer industry advocate and improve the customer experience by understanding risk and delivering end‑to‑end insurance solutions.
• Apply a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
• Use risk insights, data, and models to support informed decisions at the point of sale.
• Identify gaps in coverage, align Zurich’s products and value proposition, and offer solutions that provide contract certainty.
• Demonstrate strong analytical skills and operate as an innovative advisor.
• Underwrite, analyze, and generate new and renewal business.
• Market‑face and produce within the growing Umbrella division.
• Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating manual rules.
• Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships.
• Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.

Basic Qualifications

Executive Underwriter (Excess)

• High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, OR
• High School Diploma or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support, OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience working under time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
• Experience working in a team environment.

AVP Underwriting Director (Excess)

• High School Diploma or equivalent and 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, OR
• High School Diploma or equivalent and 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support, OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, OR
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.
• Experience with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Microsoft Office experience.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay is based on role, location, skills, and experience. The national average salary range for this position is $100,000.00 – $215,000.00. For an Executive Underwriter, the proposed range is $100,000.00 – $165,000.00 with a 15% short‑term incentive bonus. For an Underwriting Director, the proposed range is $130,000.00 – $215,000.00 with a 20% short‑term incentive bonus. Eligible employees may receive additional bonuses and merit increases.
