Facilities Maintenance Specialist I/II (Maintenance) Facilities Maintenance Specialist I: $35.09 - $42.66 Facilities Maintenance Specialist II: $36.85 - $44.79 The City of San Clemente is seeking a skilled, dependable, and service-minded individual to join our team as a Facilities Maintenance Specialist I/II. This hands‑on position performs skilled maintenance and repair work on City buildings, facilities, pools, and structures that support daily operations and community services. From carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC, minor electrical work, room setups, and pool maintenance, this role helps keep City facilities safe, functional, welcoming, and ready for use by employees, residents, and visitors. What You’ll Do: Perform skilled maintenance and repair work on City buildings and structures Complete carpentry, plumbing, painting, HVAC, minor electrical, and general facility repairs Maintain and repair aquatic facilities and pools, when assigned Set up meeting rooms and City facilities for programs, meetings, and events Estimate materials, equipment, and time needed for assigned work Troubleshoot facility‑related issues and identify practical solutions Respond to public and staff inquiries in a courteous and professional manner Support after‑hours emergency response as needed Essential and other important functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Perform a variety of skilled maintenance functions in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and structures, including carpentry, plumbing, heating and air conditioning repair, minor electrical repair, painting, and aquatic facilities and pools. Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required; maintain logs of work performed. Perform a variety of carpentry functions, including constructing forms, remodeling offices and buildings, repairing dry wall, plaster, roofing, doors, and broken tiles; installing and repairing carpet; assembling, building and/or moving office and building furniture; and repairing and replacing window frames and broken windows. Install acoustical or other ceiling tiles; hang and tape drywall and install other types and forms of paneling. Trouble shoot and maintain various plumbing systems including flush valves and water and sewer lines; unclog sinks, toilets, and urinals; repair leaks on faucets, drains, pumps, hot water tanks, piping and valves. Repair piping, hose, fittings, adapters, couplings, broken valves and wood components. Inspect air conditioning units to ensure efficient operation; diagnose mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions; install, replace, or repair damaged equipment; calibrate thermostatic controls. Install new heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; repair and/or replace damaged or worn heating, ventilation and air conditioning parts and equipment; repair or replace low/high pressure liquid lines. Perform minor electrical repairs, including replacing bulbs, troubleshooting lighting fixtures, and related electrical repairs. Paint, stain, patch and install furniture, cabinets and other equipment. Set up meeting rooms and other facilities; move furniture and equipment to appropriate locations. Maintain City pools; install new parts and equipment; clean and chlorinate pool, make repairs. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will be someone who: Has skilled maintenance experience in one or more trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, or aquatic facilities Enjoys hands‑on work and problem solving Takes pride in quality workmanship and safe work practices Can manage a variety of assignments and shifting priorities Communicates professionally with coworkers, contractors, and the public Is dependable, team‑oriented, and willing to respond when facilities need support Wants to contribute to the maintenance of public spaces in a beautiful coastal community Commercial plumbing experience is highly desirable Facilities Maintenance Specialist I Two (2) years of skilled maintenance experience in either carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation, or aquatic facilities and pools. Facilities Maintenance Specialist II Three (3) years of skilled maintenance experience in either carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation, or aquatic facilities and pools. License/Certification Requirements Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification within 12 months of employment when assigned to aquatic facility maintenance. Possession of, or ability to obtain an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification within 12 months of employment when assigned to aquatic facility maintenance. Education/Training High School Diploma, or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in maintenance, construction, utilities, or a related field. WORKING CONDITIONS Work Environment Work involves working within an indoor office, laboratory environment, water treatment plants, and water operations facilities. Work involves exposure to water, mud, sewage, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, traffic, chemicals, machinery, dirt, vibration head, cold and dampness; exposure to biological hazardous environments. Work may take place in inclement weather conditions; at elevated heights on scaffolding and/or ladders; within confined spaces, underground, on slippery or uneven surfaces; and/or around heavy construction equipment.
