The Veterinary Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the highest quality of care for patients while supporting veterinarians in various medical and surgical procedures. This position is critical in enhancing the efficiency of the clinic by taking on technical tasks, allowing veterinarians to focus on diagnosing and treating animals. Key Responsibilities

Medical Support
• Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and other medical procedures, providing restraint and handling of animals as necessary.
• Administer medications, vaccines, serums, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
• Monitor and care for animals recovering from surgery, administering anesthesia, and adjusting dosages as needed.
• Perform routine dental cleanings, assist in oral extractions, and take dental radiographs.
• Conduct in-hospital lab testing, including blood, urine, and fecal analysis, and prepare specimens for external laboratory testing.
• Obtain radiographs, ensuring proper positioning and technique, and assist in other diagnostic procedures using specialized equipment.


Client Interaction
• Educate clients on pet health, preventive care, and treatment plans, including the administration of medications and the importance of regular check-ups.
• Manage client communications, including scheduling appointments, discussing estimates and treatment plans, and providing follow-up care instructions.
• Conduct client callbacks, respond to inquiries, and assist in resolving any concerns or complaints with tact and professionalism.


Surgical Assistance
• Prepare animals for surgery, including shaving surgical areas, placing IV catheters, and setting up surgical instruments and equipment.
• Assist in surgical procedures, maintain surgical instruments, and ensure the surgery suite is clean and sterilized according to hospital protocols.
• Monitor patients during surgery, including anesthesia administration and post-operative care.


Laboratory and Pharmacy Management
• Collect and process laboratory samples, perform routine diagnostic tests, and maintain accurate records of all test results.
• Dispense and accurately label prescriptions as instructed by the veterinarian, ensuring compliance with all legal and safety regulations.
• Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, supplies, and equipment, ensuring that all necessary items are stocked and ready for use.


Hospital Operations
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites.
• Follow all OSHA and hospital safety protocols, including proper disposal of hazardous materials and adherence to infection control procedures.
• Participate in inventory management, including logging controlled substances, unpacking deliveries, and restocking supplies.


Professional Development
• Stay current with veterinary practices and technologies through continuing education opportunities and professional networking.
• Attend staff and department meetings, contribute to team discussions, and support the hospital's goals and philosophy.


Skills and Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; an Associate's degree from an accredited Veterinary Technology program is required.
• Certification: Certification as a Veterinary Technician; Fear Free certification is a plus.
• Experience: At least 1 year of relevant experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital is preferred.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in medical and laboratory procedures, knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs, and familiarity with diagnostic equipment.
• Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to educate and interact effectively with clients and team members.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and handle animals up to 45 lbs., perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, and withstand the physical demands of a veterinary environment.

Work Environment The Veterinary Technician is exposed to various working conditions, including handling aggressive animals, exposure to infectious diseases, and working with hazardous materials. The role requires the ability to manage stress, stay calm under pressure, and maintain a positive and professional demeanor.
