The Lead Vehicle & Equipment Technician serves as the senior technical leader within Fleet Management and supports the daily operations of the Service Center by providing advanced diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, quality assurance, and technical guidance for University vehicles and equipment. This position assists with coordinating workflow, supporting technician development, promoting safety, accountability, Service Center audit readiness, and a continuous improvement culture rooted in 5S principles and operational efficiency. The Lead Vehicle & Equipment Technician helps ensure fleet assets, equipment, tools, and shop operations are maintained in a safe, reliable, organized, efficient, and customer-focused manner in support of University operations. Minimum Education/Experience
Required Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Experience in the field of work related to the position's role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Advanced Vehicle & Equipment Diagnostics and Repair
- Perform advanced diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of vehicles, equipment, trailers, and powered assets utilizing manufacturer specifications, diagnostic software, service information systems, and specialized testing equipment.
- Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic system failures.
- Repair and maintain engines, drivetrains, steering systems, suspension systems, braking systems, HVAC systems, charging systems, and related vehicle and equipment components.
- Troubleshoot and repair computerized control systems, vehicle communication networks, telematics systems, and electric vehicle support systems.
- Conduct inspections and operational testing to ensure vehicles and equipment are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations prior to returning assets to service.
- Identify and recommend corrective actions for recurring equipment failures and reliability concerns.
Technical Leadership and Mentorship
- Serve as the lead technical resource within the Service Center and provide guidance, coaching, and mentorship to technicians and support staff.
- Assist technicians with complex diagnostics, troubleshooting strategies, repair procedures, and interpretation of manufacturer service information.
- Promote quality workmanship by reviewing repairs and ensuring adherence to established maintenance standards, manufacturer specifications, and departmental procedures.
- Share technical knowledge and best practices to support employee development, succession planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with training and onboarding activities for new technicians and employees.
Problem Solving and Fleet Reliability
- Analyze complex equipment failures and perform root-cause analysis to identify and implement effective corrective actions.
- Evaluate repair options and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions that improve fleet reliability and minimize downtime.
- Review maintenance history, diagnostic information, fault codes, and operational data to identify recurring issues and reliability trends.
- Collaborate with supervisors, vendors, manufacturers, and campus partners to resolve difficult technical issues.
- Assist with equipment evaluations and recommendations regarding major repairs, rebuilds, refurbishment projects, or asset replacement.
Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance
- Perform all work in accordance with University, departmental, OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable safety and environmental regulations.
- Promote a culture of safety by identifying hazards, following established safety procedures, and encouraging safe work practices among teammates.
- Conduct inspections of vehicles, equipment, tools, and work areas to identify and correct safety concerns.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety devices, and specialized equipment required for assigned tasks.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, recycling, and disposal of hazardous materials, regulated waste, batteries, fluids, and other environmental concerns.
- Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe Service Center environment through established housekeeping and 5S workplace organization principles.
- Support safety inspections, compliance initiatives, and corrective actions as necessary.
Customer Service and Collaboration
- Provide professional, responsive, and customer-focused service to campus partners, Fleet Management teammates, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence by actively listening, communicating respectfully, managing conflict professionally, and responding appropriately to customer and employee needs.
- Lead by example through professionalism, integrity, accountability, and a commitment to service excellence.

- Communicate vehicle and equipment concerns, repair recommendations, service status updates, and maintenance requirements in a clear and professional manner.

- Coordinate with vendors, manufacturers, and service providers to obtain technical information, parts support, warranty assistance, and specialized repair solutions.

- Support Motor Fleet operations by assisting with vehicle preparation, inspections, fueling, cleaning, and readiness activities to ensure vehicles are safe, presentable, and available for customer use.
Service Center Operations and Fleet Systems
- Accurately document inspections, diagnostics, repairs, labor, parts usage, and maintenance recommendations within the FASTER Fleet Management System.
- Review work orders for completeness and accuracy to ensure proper maintenance records, compliance reporting, and audit readiness.
- Assist technicians with proper work order documentation and utilization of fleet management software.
- Utilize maintenance history, equipment records, and operational data within FASTER to support troubleshooting, preventive maintenance planning, and asset lifecycle management.
- Support Fleet Management's commitment to accurate recordkeeping, performance measurement, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.
- Assist with maintaining Service Center audit readiness by ensuring work orders, inspection records, and maintenance documentation are complete and accurate.
Motor Fleet and Operational Support
- Assist with vehicle washing, detailing, fueling, inspections, and preparation activities to support Motor Fleet operations and maintain a positive customer experience.
- Assist with vehicle delivery, pickup, relocation, staging, and transportation activities as required.
- Support vehicle reservation readiness and fleet appearance standards.
- Assist with special events, emergency operations, severe weather response, and other University operational needs as assigned.
- Provide support during periods of high workload, staffing shortages, or operational demands.
Administrative and Technical Support
- Assist with inventory management, parts control, equipment tracking, and procurement-related activities.
- Assist with data entry, reporting, and special projects utilizing the FASTER Fleet Management System and FASTER Motor Pool System.
- Support Fleet Management initiatives related to telematics, fleet utilization, sustainability efforts, preventive maintenance programs, and vehicle replacement planning.
- Assist with evaluating and testing new equipment, tools, technologies, and maintenance processes.
- Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers regarding technical support, warranty claims, equipment demonstrations, and specialized repair procedures.
Training and Continuous Improvement
- Participate in departmental meetings, safety meetings, training programs, and professional development opportunities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives designed to improve service delivery, customer satisfaction, safety, and operational efficiency.
- Assist with the implementation and sustainment of 5S workplace organization standards and Service Center best practices.
- Share knowledge and technical expertise to support workforce development and organizational success.
General Responsibilities
- Maintain required certifications, licenses, and training necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Serve on University committees, task forces, or special project teams as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support Fleet Management, Warehouse, Logistics, and Facilities Management operations.
- Demonstrated experience in automotive/internal combustion engine (ICE) diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.
- Training, experience, certifications in electric vehicle (EV) systems, including high-voltage safety, battery systems, and diagnostics for platforms such as Club Car, GEM, MAX EV, or similar
- Demonstrated experience in automotive and/or equipment maintenance, including diagnostic and repair of internal combustion engine (ICE) systems.
- Experience with preventive service programs and compliance-driven environments.
- Completion of an accredited automotive technical training program (e.g., Universal Technical Institute (UTI) or equivalent). ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) A-Series certification(s) or the ability to acquire within one year of employment, offered as Professional Development.
- State Emissions and Safety Inspector Certification or the ability to acquire within the first three months of employment.
- Automotive Service Excellence A Series Certification or the ability to acquire before the first 12 months of employment.
